Seeds that were planted four years ago are now coming to fruition across our campus. In 2004, 291 students graduated from Methodist College, our greatest achievement of the year. I am confident they will find that the nurturing and education received at Methodist College has prepared them well. Our current capital campaign was initiated in 2001 to build a state-ofthe-art addition to our Science Building and a new fitness and wellness center, strengthen our endowment, and add to our operating budget. Thanks to the support of our Board, alumni, parents, foundations, corporations, and countless friends of Methodist College, we can see the finish line. We are planning a ground-breaking for these new buildings this fall. The Seeds on Good Soil campaign has helped Methodist College expand its donor base, taking our fundraising efforts to a new level. Significant gifts received in 2004 include a Kresge Foundation challenge and a large gift from BB&T. The fall of 2005 will mark the first class of our Professional MBA at Pinehurst, the College’s second master’s degree level program. This unique program will build on the traditional business administration courses by offering industry-specific electives for students entering the golf, tennis, and resort management fields of business. Our student athletes continue to dominate the USA South Athletic Conference. Overall, Methodist placed second in the President’s Cup for overall sports excellence in the conference, and our women’s golf team won their seventh consecutive NCAA Division III national championship. In addition to outstanding performance on the field, Methodist College athletes, in the first annual “Cans Across the Conference” charity event, collected over 2,000 cans, the most of any school, and donated them to a local charity. We look forward to implementing our newly approved strategic plan that will guide the College’s course for the next five years. We also anticipate the continuation of the hard work of faculty, staff, and administration, the loyal support of our donors, and the constant guidance of our boards, as our campaign comes to a successful end and our new buildings are constructed. I am very proud of the progress Methodist College has made; however, it will soon be time to plant new seeds again. Sincerely, Administrative Committee Above, L to R: George Blanc, Vice President for Student Development and Services; Bob McEvoy, Athletic Director; Rick Lowe, Vice President for Enrollment Services; Dr. Phil Williams, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Robin Davenport, Director of Development; Dr. M. A self-employed businessperson, she owned and operated Bright Leaf Tobacco Warehouse. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Friends, A s Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the past three years, I have had the opportunity to witness first-hand the remarkable progress of Methodist College as an institution, and the tremendous impact this college has had on our Fayetteville community. Who would have thought 45 years ago, when the College first opened its doors, that we would have grown so quickly from 11 students and four buildings to over 2,250 students and 29 buildings, with three more on the way? History was made in 2004 as Methodist College received its largest number of applications, admitted its largest freshman class, granted its highest number of presidential scholars, and broke record enrollment. But, quantity isn’t all that matters. The quality of a Methodist College education is priceless. Students enjoy a small, intimate learning environment that is beneficial to the development of a student academically as well as personally. Methodist College students can belong to over 70 clubs and organizations, choose from over 60 majors and concentrations, and enjoy playing for or cheering on one of the 17 intercollegiate varsity sports teams that continually dominate the USA South Athletic Conference. Students have an enriched place in which to live, learn, and develop, and I believe that students and parents alike are pleased with the well-rounded and complete experience of a Methodist College education. As a community member, I also am aware of the value of Methodist College. With 2,250 students and over 300 faculty and staff, Methodist College is doing its part to help grow our area by bringing in young, bright students from all over the world and to strengthen our economy by providing jobs and investing in our resources. A vibrant and flourishing private college in Fayetteville offers countless benefits and advantages and is very deserving of our support. If you have not had the chance to visit the Methodist College campus lately, please make it a priority to do so in the near future. We are on the eve of successfully completing the largest capital campaign in the College’s history and plan to break ground this fall on an addition to the Science Building and a new fitness and wellness center. I am grateful to the friends of the College who have supported this campaign. Your support reaffirms the value that Methodist College has on and in our community. An investment in Methodist College is an investment in our future as students, parents, friends, and community members. And it is a very bright future indeed. Sincerely, Richard L. Over $3,000,000 was raised in new gifts and pledges, representing over 1,800 friends, alumni, trustees, staff, corporations and foundations. In October 2004, Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T) pledged $750,000 toward the addition to the Science Building, representing the largest single corporate gift in the College’s history. Other significant gifts included $100,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Ron Matthews, friends of the College, and $100,000 from a North Carolina foundation. The College received exciting news in December 2004 of the award of a challenge grant of $550,000 from The Kresge Foundation toward the addition to the Science Building. The grant is conditioned upon the College raising the remaining funding needed to complete all components of the Seeds on Good Soil, A New Season campaign by October 1, 2005. This is The Kresge Foundation’s third challenge grant awarded to Methodist College, with prior grants of $250,000 in 1989 and $300,000 in 1996. The campaign, at its close, will have raised: $5.0 million to construct a 25,000 square-foot addition to the existing Science Building to house 12 state-of-the-art laboratories; $3.5 million to construct a 22,000 square-foot Fitness & Wellness Center; $2.5 million for the College’s endowment; and $1.85 million for the College’s annual fund. This is the largest and, by far, the most ambitious campaign attempted by Methodist College in its 48-year history. The Come of Age campaign, which concluded in 1990, raised $3.8 million to build the March F. Riddle Center. Expanding the Vision, which ended in 1998, yielded a total of $8.5 million—$5.8 for the construction of the Math and Computer Science Building, Walter B. and Margaret T. Clark Hall and an annex to Davis Memorial Library, plus $1.7 million for ongoing support and $1 million for endowment. At the end of 2004, a total of $11,628,082 had been raised in gifts and pledges toward the $12,850,000 campaign goal. The College anticipates completing the campaign in 2005, and breaking ground on the new buildings by October 1, 2005. For more information about the Seeds on Good Soil, A New Season campaign, or to make a gift, please contact Robin Davenport, Director of Development, at (910) 630-7200 or rdavenport@methodist.edu. METHODIST COLLEGE 2004 ANNUAL REPORT 21 mcarblack.indd 23 7/30/05 12:14:43 AM MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Alums: I had the distinct pleasure of welcoming 291 new alumni to the Methodist College Alumni Association in 2004. What an experience! Each time I stand in front of a new group of alumni I again experience that same awe-inspiring sense of accomplishment and achievement that I am sure each of us felt on our graduation day. I think we can all be re-inspired as we not only think back to our graduation day, but as we look on the many accomplishments of our classmates, peers and the whole Methodist College campus and community. To name just a few of the accomplishments on campus we would have to note a record high enrollment of 2,277 students, the addition of two new Master’s degree programs (Professional MBA at Pinehurst starting in Fall 2005 and Master’s in Justice Administration slated to begin in Spring 2006), maximum enrollment in the Master’s in Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies, and women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s tennis teams finishing first in the USA South Athletic Division III Conference. You can keep up with these many accomplishments and find out more about the happenings on campus by logging on to the College’s website at www.methodist.edu. Here you will be able to keep abreast of the many wonderful changes, advances, undertakings, and goals of the College. Additionally you can stay informed of happenings in the Academic, Admissions, Athletic, Student Life, Alumni & Development, and Administration departments of the College by subscribing to our new alumni e-newsletter at www.methodist.edu/Alum_dev/alumni_enews.shtml. What a wonderful way to stay in the know! I am personally excited to be working with some wonderful and enthusiastic alumni board members as we begin to exchange ideas and goals for our Alumni Association. We have learned much from the recent Alumni Survey and hope to incorporate many of your thoughts and comments into our future plans and goals. Complete survey results will be published in the next issue of MC Today. If you did not participate in the survey, but have ideas that we should consider, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want to make sure that the future of the Methodist College Alumni Association is nothing less than successful in its endeavor to promote the growth and continued support of Methodist College! Respectfully, THE GREATEST GIFT scholarship MBNA donations Thank you to the 562 alumni who participated in the Methodist College Alumni Credit Card Program in 2004. By using the MBNA card, a percentage of the total purchases comes back to the Alumni Association. In 2004, $1,674.45 was donated back to Methodist College. To learn more about this opportunity, contact MBNA at (800) 437-0180 or apply online at www. methodist.edu/Alum_ dev/alumni.htm. Alumni can assist in recruiting new students by offering the Greatest Gift Scholarship. Each academic year, the College allows alumni to award one scholarship to a full-time day student that he or she actively recruits for undergraduate admission. Last year, 136 alumni assisted in recruiting new students to Methodist College, an increase of 13 over the prior year. A total of 303 students received a Greatest Gift Scholarship. As a result, $197,071 was awarded in financial aid. Thank you for helping with our recruiting efforts. To learn more about the Greatest Gift Scholarship, contact the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at (910) 630-7200 or log on to www.methodist. edu/Alum_dev/ alumni_ggs.htm. Nona D.
