PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
Without the support of the many friends and alumni of
Methodist College, we would not be able to provide a
quality education to so many. Our growth would be just a
dream except for the many ways we have been impacted by
your prayers, donations of time and money, and your
endorsement.
As I look around at the positive results of your support, I
cannot help but also recognize the many valuable contributions that our
students, faculty and staff make to the world beyond our campus borders. I am
continuously pleased at the many ways in which Methodist College partners with
outside groups. Our more than 300 faculty and staff and 2,000 plus students are
viable consumers of local goods and services. But they are more than that; many
of them sit on civic boards, volunteer for worthy causes and are active in their
churches.
Our impact area is global. While a majority of our students still come from
North Carolina, more than 45 percent hail from other states and our
international students represent 30 different countries.
Last year alone, our students volunteered more than 3,300 hours of community
service for agencies such as the American Red Cross, the Cumberland County
School System, Habitat for Humanity, and Womack Army Medical Center’s
Pediatric Clinic. The College also runs an annual United Way campaign and
serves as the site of the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox drop-off.
In addition to volunteerism, our students also provide skilled services such as
the free tax preparation offered by our accounting students each spring.
Marketing students have also been very active in the community, conducting
research projects for such organizations as the Fayetteville Family Life Center, the
North Carolina Symphony and for downtown development efforts. The list goes
on and on.
We are extremely proud of the work our students, faculty and staff do in their
personal time. Their service to the greater good is the truest testament of the
liberal arts tradition of nurturing good citizens.

Dear Friends,
Methodist College began its 43rd academic year with 1,953
students. The number of freshman as well as the number of
students living on campus counted among the highest in the
College’s history. The College then celebrated two of its
largest graduating classes, with 183 graduating in the spring
and 144 graduating in the fall.
A recent theme of Methodist College is “Small college. Big
opportunities.” As we reflect on 2002, this theme flows true to all areas of campus.
Methodist College offers a breadth of options comparable to larger institutions —
more than 50 majors and concentrations, 70 student organizations, 19 varsity sports,
and much more. These options are coupled with the considerable advantages only a
small, private college affords — limited class sizes, personal attention and the
opportunity for students to join in and have an impact on the campus. The
impressive 17:1 student/faculty ratio means Methodist College students benefit from
personal attention in every class.
Our leadership is strong and consistent. Dr. Hendricks began his 20th year as
president of Methodist College in August 2002. The College has grown in strength
and numbers under his leadership. In the past two decades, enrollment has more
than doubled. Many career-oriented undergraduate majors have been added, as well
as the first graduate program.
As we reflect upon our accomplishments, it is important to look to the future. In
May 2002, the Board of Trustees announced the beginning of a campaign to
generate $11 million. These funds will enable Methodist College to further its growth
by investing in both its physical plant and financial resources. Physical
improvements include a state-of-the-art addition to the Science Building ($5 million)
and a fitness center and intramural field house ($3.5 million). Financially, $1.5
million will be used to strengthen the College’s annual fund, and $1 million is
designated to build the College’s endowment. We’ve already made some good
progress toward these goals. By the end of 2002, a total of $6,793,875 in
commitments and gifts had been received.
Small college. Big opportunities. Those of us involved in the life of Methodist
College realize the validity of these words. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit
the campus lately, I encourage you to do so. I assure you that you’ll be greeted with
a warm welcome and with a sense of family that is often missing on larger
campuses. We extend an open invitation to all that Methodist College has to offer.

2002 Highlights
AWARDS/HONORS
Methodist College student athletes achieved great things on and off the
playing field in 2002. Seventeen athletic teams appeared in NCAA III tournaments during 2002 and 16 student-athletes distinguished themselves by earning
All-American honors.
Christina Gipson, a sophomore from Dayton, OH, became the first Dixie
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference student to be selected to the NCAA-III
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. There she will work to promote a positive
environment for Division III athletes.
Elena Blanina, a then-junior student from Moscow,
Russia, became the third player in NCAA-III history to
win back-to-back titles last spring when she won her
second NCAA-III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship.
The Women’s golf team claimed its fifth consecutive NCAA-III national championship in Massachusetts in May. Additionally, all five of the golfers on
the winning team earned All-American status from the
National Golf Coaches Association.
Softball player Kristen Wallace was named a first team All-American in
softball by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Her first team honor was
the first ever in the 18-year history of the College’s softball program.
The PGA of America awarded Jerry Hogge, director of the Institute for Golf
and Tennis Management, the 2002 PGA Bill Strausbaugh/Club Relations Award.
This award bestows special recognition on a PGA golf professional who has
distinguished himself by causing dramatic improvement in employment conditions in the local PGA sections or at the national level. Under his leadership,
the Professional Golf Management program has grown from less than 100
students to 300 and was accredited by the PGA of America.
The College was pleased to present three honorary degrees in 2002.
Bishop Marian Edwards received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree for his
42 years of exemplary service to the United Methodist Church, his diligent and
inspired leadership of the North Carolina Conference, and his strong support of
United Methodist institutions of higher learning.
North Carolina artist Bob Timberlake was awarded an honorary Doctor of
Humanities at winter commencement. Timberlake is famous for his works in the
American Realist genre and his business ventures into the furniture
and home furnishings industry.
An honorary Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred upon
The Rev. Michael Safley ’72, president of the Raleigh-based
Methodist Home for Children. Safley also delivered the
winter commencement address. Both a graduate of Methodist College and the former vice president of student life,
Safley has been very active in the life of Methodist College.
Methodist College alumnus Tom Miriello ‘70 received a
College Medallion for his exemplary service in the management and delivery of mental health services in North Carolina.
Miriello retired after 31 years in the mental health profession.

The College experienced three important accreditation reviews in 2002.
All three programs passed the rigorous accreditation process with flying
colors. The Athletic Training Education program received accreditation from
the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and
the Council of Social Work Education reaffirmed the accreditation of the
College’s Social Work Program for eight years. The College’s first master’s
level program in Physician Assistant Studies was accredited through The
Southern Association on Colleges and Schools.
The College continues to grow its national reputation as evidenced by
the fact that Methodist moved up to the second tier in the U.S. News &
World Report Best Colleges Report. In recent past, the College has consistently ranked in the third tier of our classification: Comprehensive Colleges
– Bachelor’s. U.S. News publishes the numbered rank of approximately the
top 25 percent of schools in each classification. The remaining schools are
placed in tiers, based on their overall score, with the second tier schools
the next best, followed by the third and fourth tiers.
Enrollment and retention continue to improve for the College. As
Methodist began its 43rd academic year in the fall, the number of freshman
(390) and the number of students living on campus (800+) were the
highest in the College’s history.
In addition to having the largest number of freshman
students ever, the class also had the highest average SAT
scores in the history of the College. Twenty-nine percent
of the class received academic scholarships.
Numerous renovations and new facilities were
unveiled in 2002. Students were welcomed into a
second apartment-style residence hall in the fall with the
opening of Cape Fear Commons II. This hall brings the
housing capacity on campus to more than 800. The second
facility, Common Grounds Coffee House, is located in Union
Station and offers campus visitors a cozy spot to enjoy fresh
brewed coffees, iced drinks and specialty baked goods.
Two other facilities, the College’s cafeteria and
a restroom in Cumberland Hall, underwent
major face lifts. Sodex’ho, the college’s food
service company, spent approximately
$475,000 to update the dining hall,
complete with new furniture, a motorized
dish return, new kitchen equipment and
a “made-to-order” cooking area in the
center of the hall. The Green & Gold
Cafe was unveiled in August. The pilot
renovation of the Cumberland Hall
restroom precedes an effort to re-do all of
the older, outdated restroom facilities in the
College’s original residence halls.
Construction began on the Cape Fear River Walk
project. The walk, which will run from the south end of campus to the
Botanical Gardens, will be a scenic path for walkers, joggers and cyclists.

2002 Highlights
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The spring commencement brought two
distinguished speakers to campus. Bishop Marion
Edwards of the North Carolina Conference of the
United Methodist Church preached the baccalaureate
sermon in May. His text was based on Psalm 1, which
he paraphrased as “If you delight in the law of the Lord,
you will grow in character and be like a tree planted by
the rivers of the water, a tree which will blossom in its
season and bear fruit.”
Later that day, Phillip Kirk, Jr., chairman of the North
Carolina Board of Education and president of the NC
Citizens for Business and Industry, addressed the
graduates at commencement. The former state legislator
and Cabinet official concluded his speech by urging
graduates to have a positive but realistic outlook on life,
pick their battles, establish flexible goals, reach out to
those in need, stand up for their beliefs, and take part
in community affairs.

He was also the guest speaker on campus that same
evening at the Fayetteville Rotary Club’s Values and

ALUMNI P R E S I D E N T
In 2003, the alumni will be a primary focus of the College’s
third comprehensive campaign themed, Seeds on Good
Soil, A New Season. Specifically, the campaign will fund a
state-of-the-art addition to the Science building, create a
fitness center and intramural facility, strengthen the annual
fund, and build the endowment. As part of the campaign,
the Alumni Board of Directors approved a goal to increase
the Alumni Scholarship Fund to $100,000 by 2005. Each
component is important, and alumni participation is vital.
During the course of the year, alumni will be approached in person, by mail,
and through our fall phonathon to make a three-year commitment to the
campaign. I hope each of you will consider how Methodist College provided
an environment that has allowed you to grow into the person you are today.
Consider joining the Honorable Monarch Society. This new giving society
recognizes those who make a commitment of $1,000 or more over a three year
period.
I encourage each of you to support our alma mater during this crucial time in
its history. While the College needs financial support from alumni, you can also
give back by becoming involved in the life of the College. Whether you are
returning to campus or hosting an alumni function in your area, you can make
Methodist College a part of your life. Maybe the greatest gift you can give to the
College is the gift of a new student. Methodist College has so much to offer
and we, as alumni, must continue to take a significant leadership role.
Lastly, I would like to mention that this is my last year serving as president of
the Methodist College Alumni Association. It has been a privilege to serve the
alumni and the College. I want to thank the Board of Directors for a job well
done. You have an incredibly active and committed Board of Directors that will
continue to serve all of our alumni as well as Methodist College.

THE GREATEST GIFT
A
lumni can assist in recruiting new students to their alma mater by offering the
Greatest Gift Scholarship. Each academic year, the College allows alumni to award
one scholarship to a full-time day student whom he or she actively recruits for
undergraduate admission. The amount of the scholarship is determined by the Financial
Aid Office and is renewed annually. Note – the scholarship must be processed prior to
the student’s first enrollment date (first day of classes) at Methodist College.
Last year, 129 alumni helped in recruiting new students to the College and a total of
313 students received a Greatest Gift Scholarship. As a result, $208,373 was awarded
in financial aid. Thank you for helping with our recruiting efforts.
The College honors its alumni by funding this scholarship. Please help a prospective

The Methodist College Parents Association was established in 1997 to create a
communication link between the College
and parents/guardians of currently enrolled
students. All parents/guardians are members
of the Association at no cost.
The Parents Advisory Council governs the
Parents Association. The Council is comprised of a Chair, Vice-Chair, and representatives from each academic class. The Council
operates on an open membership policy and
welcomes new members throughout the
year. The council helps plan events for the
college such as Family Weekend, New
Student Orientation, and move-in weekend.

institutions, has a large number of faculty
members that have had their works published.
During 2002, six faculty members achieved this
milestone:
Two professors from the Criminal
Justice Department published works
last year. Dr. Darl H. Champion, Sr.,
head of the Department of Sociology
and Criminal Justice, co-authored a
textbook with Dr. Michael Hooper,
entitled Introduction to American
Policing through McGraw Hill
Publishers. Assistant Professor of
Criminal Justice Studies Dr. Maurice
Godwin, published two solo projects:
Criminal Pyschology and Forensic
Technology: A Collaborative
Approach to Effective Profiling, and
Hunting Serial Predators: A
Multivariate Classification Approach to
Profiling Violent Behavior.
Robin Green, associate professor of
English, published her book of poetry
entitled, Lateral Drift.
Dr. Norm Wilson, associate professor
of history, was awarded an “Editor’s
Choice Award” from Booklist for his
book “World Eras: The European
Renaissance and Reformation (13501600).
Dr. Jo Ann Parkerson, professor of
education, published Transitions in
American Education: A Social History
of Teaching.
Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Keith
Dippre signed a publishing contract
with Musical Alchemy, Inc., of
Boulder, CO. His composition,
“Hyperlydia,” is for autoharp, calliope,
oboe, accordion, soprano saxophone,
xylophone, marimba, electric bass,
bass drum and metal windchimes.
