METHODIST COLLEGE
ANNUAL REPORT
2000
President’s
Message
The year 2000 was a real turning point in Methodist
College history. Unique academic programs, increased
enrollment and world-class athletics are propelling us to the
national forefront of independent liberal arts colleges. Our
institution has truly been blessed, and we could not have
done it without your support.
This Annual Report of Donors is our small way of saying
thank-you for the many gifts you've given us.
This publication pays tribute to the hundreds who give of their time, talents and worldly treasures for
the betterment of Methodist College. We know that lists and photos could never fully express our
thanks; we hope that our gratitude is further evidenced by our stewardship and continued growth.
In the Fall, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the opening of the College. Our mission is the same
today as it was back in 1960 — "to nurture moral values and ethical decision-making; to prepare
students for a variety of careers; and to provide educational and cultural services and resources to the
community."
While our mission remains constant, our vision continually expands taking our academic programs,
campus ministry, residence life and athletic teams to new dimensions. We were approved to offer our
first master's level degree in the Physician Assistant Program, two distance learning courses went online, and a new undergraduate major was introduced — Resort Management — as a result of a partnership with The Pinehurst Co., Inc. Upperclassmen moved into the brand new apartment-style
residence hall complex — Cape Fear Commons; we began recruiting athletes for women's lacrosse,
our newest NCAA offering; and we resurfaced the campus track where we can now host meets.
Methodist College has turned the corner on the new millennium stronger, larger and more competitive
than ever. We wouldn't be here without your support, and for that we are sincerely grateful.

A Message From The
Board of Trustees’
Chairman
“Donors don't give to institutions.
They invest in ideas and people in whom they believe."
—G.T. Smith
This statement was never more true than it is today at
Methodist College. Our alumni, friends, faculty and staff
uphold the traditions of a liberal-arts, church-affiliated
education every time they volunteer or make a gift.
It is not the physical facilities or the economic impact of Methodist College that people support; they
believe in the campus-wide commitment to developing well-rounded, responsible citizens.
The year 2000 embodied growth and expansion for the College. Alumni giving was up, donors to the
Annual Fund increased, and more than $255,000 in scholarship money was awarded to worthy
students.
Unfortunately, the year was not without a significant loss. The College community mourned the death
of a long-time friend. I.H. "Ike" O'Hanlon, who passed away in July, was chairman of the Board of
Trustees from 1981-1990. He served a total of 14 years on the board. Ike was the chairman of Methodist
College's "Come of Age" capital campaign to build a physical activities center in the late 1980s. He
was an inspiration to all who served with him.
In 2000, the Board of Trustees focused on implementation of the College's five-year Strategic Plan.
As chairman, I extend my great appreciation to fellow board members for their vision and commitment.
On behalf of the board, I would like to thank everyone who helps turn our mission into reality. Whether
it's welcoming our students to the Fayetteville area, giving to the Annual Fund, sponsoring an athletic
team, endowing a scholarship or attending a cultural event, your belief and investment in the mission
of Methodist College ensures our continued growth and success.

What It’s All About
Life is not just about what knowledge you possess or how physically fit you are, but also about what you do to make the world a better place.
Methodist College students put these words into action in the 1999-00 academic year by completing more than 2,000 community service
hours.
During Fall break, campus minister Carl King took 14 students to the Bahamas. But they didn’t go to hang out at the beach or sightsee. Instead,
they painted a local church, built shelters for the homeless and cleaned up an unsafe playground. Takechia Jackson, a student from Currie, NC,
said “I became very grateful for the things I have, and I really enjoyed the experience.”
A little closer to home, student athletes spent a lot of time volunteering for the Cumberland County School System, the CARE Clinic and
many other organizations. On campus, students, faculty and
staff come together each year to participate in the Jessie Smith
Annual Wood Cutting Project. Trees are chopped down and
delivered to needy families in the area.
William Walker, assistant dean of students and this year’s
project leader said, “ It warms my heart to know that we have
brought warmth to people who normally would not have it.
All in all the project is a good time to see family, friends and
the campus come together.”
Some students put the practical skills they’re taught at the
College to help others. The Accounting Club conducts the
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, having received authorization from the IRS to assist people with filing
their taxes. These dedicated individuals have successfully prepared more than 200 federal returns and almost as many state
returns.
Stressing volunteerism and community involvement supports the College’s mission. Sarah Salter, a freshman from
Goldsboro, NC, who spends much of her time volunteering
on and off campus, said “The College does a good job providing students with opportunities to help the community.”
Working Together, We Can Do Anything
Mike Krick '92, (center) head golf
professional at Carolina Trace
Country Club in Sanford, NC,
recently presented a check for the
Professional Golf Management
(PGM) Program to Jerry Hogge,
director of the Program (left) and
Dr. Elton Hendricks, College
president (right). The money was
raised at an annual golf
tournament for members of Krick's
club.

A Message From The
Alumni
Association
It’s been a great year! So many positive things have happened that
it’s hard to know where to begin. Alumni involvement is at an alltime high. Participation in the Annual Fund climbed to more than
18 percent and Homecoming and alumni events had record
attendance.
In 2000, the Homecoming dinner and dance were held together for the first time. The Association honored
three members this year. Dennis Bruce ’68 won the Distinguished Alumni Award, Lynn Carraway ’71 received
the Outstanding Alumni Service Award, and Jerry Hogge was presented with the Outstanding Faculty Award.
Also at Homecoming, a silent auction was held which raised $2,100 for the Alumni Scholarship Fund. The silent
auction will become an annual event just like the William P. Lowdermilk Golf Classic and the Athletic Hall of
Fame banquet.
A special thanks to the following who hosted events last year: Jerry Monday ’71 who hosted a cookout at his
home in Raleigh; Bruce Pulliam, retired faculty member, for organizing a pre-game luncheon at Chowan
College; and the Alumni Association for hosting a tailgate lunch before the Oyster Bowl in Hampton, VA.
In addition to sponsoring and attending events, alumni continued to increase their financial support of the
College. Participation in the Annual Fund was up three percent which represents 139 more alumni who gave in
2000.
Our alma mater continues to need our help. We can make a tremendous difference in the support offered to
the College by making a commitment ourselves. A high percentage of alumni giving is a sign of a strong
institution. What’s important is your participation, not how much you give.
Make a point to visit the College Web site at www.methodist.edu. Find old friends and help them find you in the
alumni e-mail directory.
With your effort and support we can continue to build on the momentum of the last year. We will continue to
keep you updated on alumni events and news.
Thank you for making 2000 an extraordinary year!

For Methodist College
Alumni can provide support for Methodist
College by going to the grocery store, the
gas station or even out to dinner through a
special program offered by MBNA America,
one of the nation’s leading credit card
companies.
By simply using an MC MBNA card, a percentage of the purchases comes to the MC
Alumni Association. Since the program’s
inception in 1995, the College has received
more than $7,000.
We’d like to say a special thank you to the
760 alumni who are currently participating

TOTALS:
Remember These Times
In today’s mobile society, we know that people move
around a lot. It’s hard to keep up with old classmates, and
unfortunately, the last alumni directory is already
outdated. But we’ve got good news. A new directory is
on its way!
The Methodist College Alumni Directory, scheduled for
release in December 2001, will be the most up-to-date
and complete reference of Methodist College alumni
ever compiled. This edition will include current names,
addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, business
information, and much more. All of this will be bound into
an impressive library-quality edition.
The Alumni Affairs Office has contracted with Bernard C.
Harris Publishing Company to produce this piece. Harris
is currently researching data and compiling the necessary
information by mailing a questionnaire to all alumni. Look
for the questionnaire to arrive by the end of March.
Please make all efforts to fill it out and return it . . .
it’s important to your fellow alumni.

The
Greatest Gift
The Greatest Gift Scholarship has made recruiting
Methodist College students easy for Larry Frazier ’70,
who is a retired teacher in Fayetteville. Using this
incentive, Larry has brought many students to his alma
mater.
Desiree Horton, a junior from Fayetteville, was in
the marching band with Frazier’s son in high school.
Desiree expressed an interest in studying music at
Methodist.
“I didn’t hesitate in offering Desiree the opportunity
for a Greatest Gift Scholarship,” said Frazier. “I saw
this as a way to help her with her education, and help
the College with a new student.”
Giovanna Jacobs, a sophomore from Fayetteville,
had never met Frazier in person when he offered to
complete a Greatest Gift Scholarship application for
her. During her senior year of high school, Giovanna
participated in the Cumberland County Schools Web

Class of 1973
Giovanna Jacobs, Larry Frazier ’70, and Desiree Horton.
“When Giovanna mentioned that she was considering attending Methodist, I was able to help her make
a decision by offering the Greatest Gift Scholarship,”
Frazier said.
Since 1976, Methodist College has offered alumni
an incentive to recruit new students to their alma
mater. Through the Greatest Gift Scholarship, the
College allows all alumni to give a four-year scholarship to a student whom he or she recruits, at no
personal cost to alumni. Last year 290 students
received a Greatest Gift Scholarship.
An alum can award one Greatest Gift Scholarship
per academic year, by simply filling out an application
form. The amount of the scholarship depends on the
financial need of the individual. Awards are renewed
annually, provided the recipient makes satisfactory
academic progress.
The College honors its alumni by funding the
Greatest Gift Scholarships. Please help a deserving
student and your alma mater by awarding your
personal scholarship. Call the Alumni Office at
(910) 630-7167, (888) 221-4826, or e-mail
tmaze@methodist.edu to request an application.
Note: In order for the student to qualify, the application must
be received 30 days prior to the student’s first enrollment at
Methodist College. Also, the Greatest Gift Scholarship is not
recognized as a charitable gift to Methodist College under IRS
laws.

ANNUAL REPORT
2000
Two Men — One Vision
The legacy of retired COL David R. Nimocks Sr. plays a vital role in the
Reeves School of Business through the Nimocks Endowed Professorship. This fund was created in 1998 by David R. Nimocks Jr. to honor the
memory of his father’s interest in the development of students and the
Fayetteville community.
The elder Nimocks was a native of Fayetteville who spent most of his
life in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he was a professor of
military science and tactics for numerous college ROTC programs and
he served as a finance officer. He was also awarded the Purple Heart
for service in France during World War I.
“He loved teaching kids. He enjoyed this duty because it enabled
him to work with and aid in the development of students,” said Nimocks.
“I thought the best way to honor my father was to establish a professorship at Methodist College.”
The Nimocks Endowed Professorship was established by a gift from
Mr. Nimocks Jr. that provides the income for teaching, research support
and professional development for an existing professor. The College
uses the interest earned from the fund to accomplish these goals. “My
father loved seeing students progress, and with the professorship his
vision will live on for generations,” Nimocks said.
The selection process for the professorship is competitive. Four
proposals were submitted to the selection committee, which was made
up of Dr. Anthony DeLapa, dean of academic affairs; Dr. Elton
Hendricks, president; and Joe Doll, director of the Reeves School of
Business.
Dr. Lin in the classroom.
The first recipient of the Nimocks Professorship is Dr. Jen-Hsiang Lin.
The committee chose his proposal because “it incorporated research
and is a tool to help increase enrollment in the business school and
recruit quality students to Methodist College,” said Doll.
Lin’s project will focus on “collaborative learning.” He said he
believes he was awarded the professorship based on his vision and his
shared belief in student development. The project will increase student
participation in and out of the classroom by using technology to open
the door for discussion and debate.
Lin and his students are interfacing with a Web site especially
designed for the class. The page features class discussions, homework
assignments, extra-curricular readings, surveys and quizzes, and it gives
students an opportunity to post questions to each other and to Dr. Lin.
Lin said he believes the “collaborative learning project” is one way for
students to start thinking about teamwork and the application of their
knowledge to further enhance their college careers. It also prepares
them for the business world and its use of technology.
He said, “This tool is not designed to erase personal interaction
between the student and professor, but to enhance the discussion and
active participation in the course. Students must read their book
assignments, post their homework and take quizzes via the Web page.
The course is more than reading a book and taking exams; the course is
designed to make students apply those skills taught in the classroom
and use them effectively.
“I appreciate the opportunity that the Nimocks professorship has
given me,” Lin said. “I hope that many more donors will follow Mr.
Nimocks’ lead to invest in and help develop our students.”

In December the Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. (CCF)
awarded Methodist College’s Lura S. Tally Center for Leadership
Development a $4,500 grant to establish a leadership training facility
that will serve the greater Fayetteville area.
The Center will operate from a seminar-style classroom and an
adjacent office suite for Dr. Suzan Cheek, director of the Tally Center,
and Dr. Andrew Ziegler, coordinator. It is located on the lower level of
the Trustees Classroom Building. The CCF grant covered one-third of
the cost of the renovations and new furnishings; the Tally Center and
its Advisory Board raised the balance.
“Development of new leaders is critical to the quality of life here,”
said Mary Holmes, executive director of the Foundation. “I see this
center serving as a catalyst for leadership development in the
community.”
“We are grateful to Cumberland Community Foundation and our
Advisory Board
for their support
of this project,”
said Cheek.

organizations.
We plan to send information about the Leadership Center and its
services to businesses, government agencies and civic groups
throughout Cumberland County.”
Dr. Cheek and Dr. Ziegler will be the lead instructors for both
“basic” and “advanced” workshops, assisted by other College faculty
and community experts as needed. In the last two years, Cheek and
Ziegler have provided leadership training for the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and the NC Association of Symphony Orchestras
under the auspices of the Tally Center.
The Center will offer a menu of 12 instructional “modules” from
which local organizations will build the specific content for the
leadership training they need. The modules feature one to four hours
of instruction and cover topics such as: The Myers-Briggs Personality Type
Indicator, How to Build and Lead a Team, Becoming an Effective Planner and
How to Solve Problems.
A brochure describing the Center’s public offerings is now available to anyone interested in leadership training workshops. For more
information about leadership training available through the Tally
Center, contact Dr. Suzan Cheek at (910) 630-7070 or Dr. Andrew
Ziegler at (910) 630-7488.

ANNUAL REPORT

The Longest Way
Mrs. Longest illustrates a lecture.
The sign on her driveway gate reads “The Longest Way.”
It has both a literal and a figurative meaning.
Pauline M. Longest is a remarkable woman — a botanist,
teacher, world traveler, environmentalist, and philanthropist. Since
retiring from the Methodist College science faculty 21 years ago,
she has remained a loyal and enthusiastic donor to the College.
She recently made a generous gift toward the planned construction of an addition to the Science Building.
Like many teachers, Mrs. Longest is intensely proud of her
former students and their successes. In a 1997 Methodist College
Today interview, she spoke warmly of those who had written to her
over the years — alumni who had become teachers, doctors,
researchers and leaders in their professions and communities.
During her 17 years at Methodist, Mrs. Longest was adviser to
the Student Education Association (SEA). Each Spring, she
returns to Methodist to give the Pauline Longest Award to an
outstanding SEA member. She has also been very active in Delta
Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women educators.
Another example of “The Longest Way” is the Pauline Longest
Nature Trail on campus. Established in 1985, it is actually two trails
that feature winding paths dotted with botanical markers and
stunning views of the creek bed/gorge that leads to the Cape
Fear River.
Traveling and learning about other cultures is also part of her
way. Her book, Going Places, is based on eight decades of travel to
52 countries, and features colorful anecdotes, vivid word pictures,
and the author’s own pen and ink drawings of animals.
Now 87, Mrs. Longest continues to play a vital role in the life of
Methodist College and its students. “The Longest Way” is a
primary example of one component of a liberal arts education —
a lifelong journey of learning.

Adventures In Learning
"We like Mike" is something you hear a lot
from members of the Outdoor Adventure
Club. The Mike in this case is club adviser Mike
Sinkovitz, also known as "Sink."
Sinkovitz joined Methodist in 1988 and
shortly thereafter, became the director of
intramurals and recreation at Methodist. He
was also an assistant football coach. In 1991,
he started the Outdoor Adventure Club. The
mission of the group is to design and particiMike Sinkovitz
pate in activities that allow them to explore
nature, learn and share skills, develop leadership traits, and "have fun,"
according to Sinkovitz.
The club's first excursion was a canoeing trip to Camp Rockfish in
nearby Hoke County. Although most excursions are weekend trips,
five-day trips are taken during the Fall, Thanksgiving, and Spring breaks.
The club holds fund-raisers to pay for the outings, and the College
provides transportation. Participants pay a small fee for each trip.
During 1999-2000, the club took 11 field trips. Members say the highlight of last year's activities was a Thanksgiving break trip to Dry
Tortugas National Park in Key West, FL. On that trip, they sailed, snorkeled, and swam with trained dolphins. Sinkovitz says Florida is a favorite destination of members.
"In December 1998, we visited a dolphin training center in Key
Largo, FL and Crystal Springs, where we swam with the manatees,"
he said. "About 25 students went on that trip."
A former Green Beret who served six years in Vietnam and a
total of 26 years in the U.S. Army, Sinkovitz began his football coaching career at the University of Wisconsin (Plattville). He is a native
of Harrisburg, PA, and received his undergraduate education at Upper Iowa University where he majored in business, as well as health,
physical education, and recreation. Mike also worked for a
time as a licensed contractor
and has built several gazebos,
an arbor, a golf driving range
shelter, and a press box addition on campus.
Although Sinkovitz gave up
coaching four years ago, the
Outdoor Adventure Club,
along with the intramural program and campus construction projects keep him busy.
By giving generously of his
time and talent, Mike Sinkovitz
has endeared himself to the
students and staff at Methodist College, and he continues
to use his skills to do what he
does best: teach and develop
students.

Donors Make Collection Special
In June, the campus community celebrated the opening of Davis Memorial Library’s Special Collections Room, which
houses varied exhibits and memorabilia, donated mostly from private sources. "Our collections reflect the people of MC
and the city of Fayetteville," said Arlene Fields, cataloguing and special collections librarian. "We hope to continue to use these materials
to illuminate the links between the past and present in our community."
One donation provided insight into the history of the College campus. An alumnus, Howard Arden ’70, donated his collection of arrowheads gathered on the property, offering indications that American
Indians once lived on the banks of the Cape Fear River. Subsequent
evidence has been unearthed during construction projects.
Other donations to the Special Collections Room include a fourvolume set of Audubon’s The Birds of America from Margaret Rose and
Terry Sanford, a six-volume set of The Works of Shakespeare published in
Taylor McMillan presents his mother’s Carolina College
1770 from Otis D. Purdie, a Spanish translation of The Complete Works of
photo album to Dr. Hendricks.
John Wesley from the Wesley Heritage Foundation, and Donald Green’s
prints and watercolor drawings of historic Fayetteville buildings from
retired faculty member Bruce Pulliam.
Since the room opened, three exhibits have been displayed.
Two centered around the Marquis de Lafayette, one on his farewell tour of the United States (1824-25) and the other on his early
life. The Lafayette Collection features letters, books, and memorabilia including period furniture, French and American flags, and
a portrait of Lafayette. Fayetteville’s Lafayette Society recently
donated funds to purchase a buffet table and a game table for
the display.
The third exhibit tells the story of Carolina College, an all-female institution in Maxton, NC, that closed in 1926. Methodist
College is the permanent repository for the college’s memorabilia. Alumnae and their family members have contributed much
to the collection.

Achieving Excellence In Athletics
As the year 2000 came to an end, Methodist College had primed
itself to make a mark in intercollegiate athletics in the new millennium.
The year began and ended with several championships. The women’s
basketball team got things started by winning its second consecutive
Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship
after going an impressive 11-0 in the March F. Riddle Center.
Methodist Spring sports continued the string of excellence as the
softball, men’s golf, and women’s golf teams each brought home championship hardware to the MC campus. The softball team claimed its
second consecutive DIAC crown and earned the school’s second-ever
NCAA appearance. The MC men’s golf team earned its eighth consecutive and 19th overall DIAC championship en route to a NCAA-III
national runner-up finish. The women’s golf team blistered the competition as it claimed its third consecutive NCAA National Championship
with a 51-stroke team win. Lady Monarch golfer Stacey Smith claimed
the NCAA-III Individual National Championship.
The success continued with the 2000 Fall seasons as the MC football
team
earned a runner-up finish in the final year of the Atlantic Central
Members of the 1990 men's golf team recently gathered back at Jeckyll Island, GA
Football Conference and won an “unofficial” Dixie Conference crown
for the 10-year anniversary of winning the College's first NCAA national team
championship. L to R: Hank Klein '92, Jim Percherke '90, John McCullough '90, Rob
with a 4-0 slate against conference schools. Additionally, the women’s
Pilewski '92, Randy Shaw '90 and coach Steve Conley.
tennis duo of Elena Blanina and Carla Simpson made school history by
winning the 2000 Fall Rolex NCAA Division-III National Championship
in women’s doubles competition.
MC athletics remains among the national elite in the race for the Sears Director’s Cup which recognizes the nation’s overall outstanding
athletic programs. In all five years of the award’s existence, the Monarchs have finished in the top 15 percent of all 393 NCAA Division-III
member institutions.
This past athletic year saw six MC student-athletes earn All-American honors, nine earn All-Region status, 31 garner the prestigious DIAC
All-Academic honor, and 52 student-athletes named to their respective All-Conference teams.
Monarch athletics intends to keep its pursuit of excellence alive in the new millennium and continue to bring recognition and honor to the
Methodist College community. MC student-athletes appreciate the continued support of our alumni, parents, and friends and pledge to
continue to pursue excellence in both the classroom and on the playing fields as a national powerhouse in intercollegiate athletics.

More Than Just A Free Ride
There are many ways to make a gift to
Methodist College. . . some more unique
than others. Methodist College staff member
Dawn Parker ’99 learned this first-hand when
she went to trade in her used van last year.
“The dealership was going to give me
$300 for it, and I knew it was worth more
than that,” said Dawn. She decided to do
some research on the Internet to see what
options she had. That’s when Dawn learned
about Gifts in Kind.
A Gift in Kind is the donation of a product or
service for use by an organization. Dawn
discovered that she could donate her van to
Methodist College and help with its transportation needs, while gaining a tax break for
herself.
“It wasn’t just good for the College, it was
good for me. I did better financially by

have if I had traded it in,” Dawn said.
Standing with Dawn is the manager of Pizza Hut on Ramsey Street, Raymond Hathaway.
These days, Dawn’s van transports mail

off campus. The seats were taken out and
the van is able to carry boxes of mail that can
be accessed from the inside. Prior to receiving the van, a pickup truck was used to deliver campus mail, which made it more
difficult for the driver to access the boxes of mail, and made it especially difficult to deliver mail in the rain.
As an employee of Methodist, Dawn believes it is important to support her employer, which is why she chose to donate
her van to the College.
“Those of us on the inside need to show our loyalty,” said Dawn. “I’ll continue to support the College in any way I can.”

Methods of Giving
CASH
The most common way to support Methodist College is through a gift of cash
which is deductible for income tax purposes in the year of the contribution.
BEQUESTS
Gifts to Methodist College through a bequest in a will escape estate tax at the
donor’s death and greatly benefit the future of the College.
INSURANCE
By naming Methodist College as the owner and beneficiary of a paid-up policy, you are
entitled to an income tax deduction generally equal to the replacement value or cost
basis of the policy, whichever is less. If you continue paying the premium on a policy you
donate to Methodist, you may claim the premium amount as an annual tax deduction.
GIFT ANNUITY
A charitable gift annuity is a contract between you or another beneficiary and Methodist
College whereby you transfer assets to the College and receive fixed payments for life.
The payment amount is determined by your age at the time of your contribution.
SECURITIES
The contribution of long-term appreciated securities enables you to claim an income tax charitable deduction for the full present fair market value, and avoid
capital gains taxes on the appreciation.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS
Remainder trusts are life income arrangements whereby assets are gifted to the trust, which
in turn pays you or your beneficiary a regular income for life. The donated assets can be
cash, securities, or property, and at the time of the gift(s), you accrue potential tax reduction benefits. After the death of the last income beneficiary, the trust assets revert to Methodist College to be used according to your wishes.
REAL ESTATE
An outright gift of property enables you to claim an income tax charitable deduction equal to the property’s fair market value (if held long-term). Also, you avoid
possible capital gains taxes on the property’s appreciation.
Methodist College encourages you to consult with your professional advisers to design
the most advantageous program for you and your family. If we can be of assistance, please
contact a member of the Development Staff at (910) 630-7200 or (888) 221-4826.
