Robinson, Public Relations Assistant Methodist College does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, national or ethnic origin, religious denomination, or disabilities for otherwise qualified persons in the administration of its admission, educational policies, scholarships, loan programs, athletics, employment, or any other college-sponsored or advertised programs. Methodist College is related by faith to the North Carolina Annual Conference, Southeastern Jurisdiction, The United Methodist Church. It is an independent corporation rather than an agency of the Conference and is responsible for its own debts and obligations. Methodist College moved ahead on many fronts in 1999. The College opened two new buildings funded by the Expanding the Vision Campaign. Margaret and Walter Clark Hall gave the Reeves School of Business a new, state-of-the-art academic facility, with its own computer lab and a small auditorium. The new wing of Davis Memorial LibralYand improvements to the original building provided new reference and study areas, a Special Collections Room, and 20 additional computer stations for students. In the academic area, Methodist was recommended and approved for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and RAMON L. YARBOROUGH Schools. In athletics, the men's and women's golf teams again won their respective national championships. The Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its second class. On behalf of the Methodist College Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the administration, faculty and staff for all their hard work. These achievements and those of Methodist students and alumni are a constant source of inspiration to us. Through its 7,097 graduates, Methodist College has become a great force for good in our community, state, nation and world. In the Fayetteville area, Methodist College remains a major economic and cultural asset. The bulk of its $24 million budget is spent locally, while its 2,000 students and 294 full-time employees constitute a major block of consumers. Special events at Methodist-symposia, concerts and summer camps--draw thousands of people to the campus. Faculty, staff and students give many hours of volunteer service to the Fayetteville area. Because Methodist is tuition-driven and has a relatively small endowment, gifts and grants are needed to keep pace with recent enrollment growth and new programs. To the hundreds of friends and alumni whose gifts have endowed scholarships, helped fund new buildings, or undelwritten new programs, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Your support has made a tremendous difference in the last decade, and continued growth will require even more in the years ahead. On the eve of the 21st centUlY,let's resolve to keep Methodist College a place of honor and distinction, a school that prepares people of all ages and backgrounds to go forth and do great things in our world. I am proud to be associated with Methodist College, and I am excited about its future. Sincerely yours, ~d~ Ramon 1. The Alumni Association will be emphasizing the 20 x 2000 campaign this year. The 20 x 2000 campaign is an effort to increase Methodist Alumni gift giving to 20 percent in 2000. Aclass agent program is currently being established. I encourage all of you to help us reach this goal by making a gift and by volunteering to help with the campaign. Ahigh percentage of alumni giving is a sign of a strong institution. The Alumni Association had several social gatherings in 1999. We will be hosting many more events this coming year. If you are interested in hosting or helping with an event in your area, please call the Alumni Office. An event as simple as a cookout or lunch at a local restaurant is a great way to catch up with old friends and meet Methodist graduates that you do not knOw. Some of you would be surprised to find out how many Monarchs are living in your community! The College is always looking for help in recruiting new students. Thank you to the 301 people who gave the Greatest Gift scholarship in 1999. This scholarship program has helped educate many of Methodist's best students. Also, the Admissions Office would like alumni to help with college fairs. Call Admissions and find out when a representative will be in your area. Asyou can see we have many exciting plans for this year. We need your help to reach these goals! I can't emphasize enough that we would like for each and every one of you to interact with the Methodist College community in some way this year. Thank you for your continued support. ~~ Bryan May '92 President Methodist College Alumni Association 12 ~eCial Georgia Student Finance Commission Recognition and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Lethodist THE 20% CollegeAlumniAssociation BY 2000 INITIATIVE! What is 20% by 2000? Endorsed by the Methodist College Alumni Association Board ofDirectors, this initiative is an effort to reach and sustain 20% of active alumni support by the end of 2000. Last year we were at 15%. Why such an initiative? Methodist College is a non-profit 501-C (3) organization, with an operating budget in excess of $24 million. It receives no income or support from the state or federal level and tuition costs cover only 57% of the operating costs of the College. Also, many charitable foundations and trusts ask our alumni giving percentage when approaching them for major gifts or grants. They want to know how our closest constituents view the College and measure the annual giving rate, How can I participate? Your gift, which may be designated to a specific area, directly impacts our students inside and outside of the classroom. Whether it is $10, $100, or $1,000, you can help us reach our goal now. This year we are stressing palticipation rather than dollar amount. Make checks payable to Methodist College. All gifts are tax deductible as allowed by law. Can I make my gift go further? Yes. Check with your company's Human Resource Office to see if they match charitable gifts to Colleges. This could double, and in some cases, even triple your gift. What about alumni giving at similar schools? Virginia Wesleyan 13% Roanoke College 35% Maryville College 46% Emory & Henry 50% Methodist College offers many ways to help support your alma mater. We are here to help. Securities The contribution of long-term appreciated seclllities enables you to claim an income ta,xchalitable deduction for the full preseot fair market value, and you can avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciation. Real Estate An outright gift of property enables you to claim an income tax charitable deduction equal to the property's fair market value (if held long-term). Also, you avoid possible capital gains taxes 00 the property's appreciation. Insurance By naming Methodist College as the owner and beneficiary of a paid-up policy, you are entitled to an income tax deduction generally equal to the replacement value or cost basis of the policy, whichever is less. If you continue paying the premium on a policy you donate to Methodist, you may claim the premium amount as an annual tax deduction. Gift Annuity A charitable gift annuity is a contract between the donor and Methodist College whereby the donor transfers assets to the College and receives fixed payments for his/her life or for that of another beneficiary. The payment amount is determined by your age at the time of your contribution. Charitable Remainder Trusts Remainder trusts are life income arrangements whereby assets are gifted to the trust, which in turn pays the donor or hislher beneficiary a regular income for life. The donated assets can be cash, securities, or property, and at the time of the gifts, potential tax reduction benefits accrue to the donor. After the death of the last income beneficiary, the trust assets revert to Methodist College to be used according to the donor's prior wishes. "I believe she will be very successful in helping us identify and cultivate potential donors to Methodist College. She will also be a contact for our endowed scholarship program." Career Services: An Untapped Resource for Alumni Lori Bumgarner, Director of Career Services at Methodist, reminds alumni that Career Services can help them in two ways. First of all, those in need of good employees or those aware of a pending job opening within their organization or company can take advantage of her office's updated Web site (www.methodist.edu/careerservices) by posting job openings with her, by viewing the resumes of current students looking for work, or by participating in career fairs or solo recruiting visits to campus. She is also seeking "career mentors" - MC alumni willing to advise current students about their particular career field. Secondly, Career Services is glad to assist job-seeking alumni or those wishing to make a career change by posting their resumes on the Career Services Web site, by scheduling interviews with recruiters who are scheduled to visit the campus, by linking them with job banks and career development services, or by supplying them with graduate school information.
