Mr. Bowman’s Bulletin September 25, 2015 Parents and Families, Fundraiser books went home last week. Please remember, if you are not participating in the fundraiser, send back the coupon book with your child. Reading/Writing Workshop We have been using our workshop time to investigate nonfiction books. Studying text features helps the reader quickly find information. Using trade books and Scholastic News has been part of the introduction to: Types of Print, Table of Contents, Captions, Glossary, and Index. Students will then be able to use these attributes when they are expected to write reports. Second graders have also been writing narratives. Applying the writing process enables the students to capture memories, refine the words, and to sequence events in a logical order. Students also enjoyed creative writing with our Johnny Appleseed celebration. Math This week in math we focused on counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Students enjoyed taking large collections of items and sorting them into groups and discovered how quickly they could count. A great way to practice this at home is with their snack. Have your child separate their goldfish crackers into groups of 2s, 5s, and 10s. On Friday, we continued to celebrate Johnny Appleseed’s birthday by creating a graph. We graphed the variety of apples that our classmates brought into school. ! Word Study Second graders worked hard on their Leadership Notebooks this week. This year, we are tracking our DRA level, Spelling Inventory level, High Frequency Words (spelling and reading) and our victories. We took time to put our notebooks in order and also graphed our reading and spelling data. We will continue to track our data throughout the school year. Social Studies This week we finished up learning about Habit #1: Be Proactive and began learning about Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind. We read Pancakes, Pancakes and Click, Clack Moo Cows that Type to help us identify how these characters began with the end in mind. Students also wrote about how they will begin with the end in mind at home and school. We also had a wonderful time celebrating Johnny Appleseed’s birthday on Friday! The students enjoyed graphing the different apple colors that were brought in, labeling the parts of an apple, observing if their apple would sink or float when put into water, and counting the number of seeds their apple had.
