Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Friday, December 18,2015 The Second grade team would like to wish you Happy Holidays! We have had a wonderful 2015 year and look forward to the New Year! Your child has a blue home reading packet. This packet is for you to enjoy reading throughout the break! Have a safe and wonderful break! - The Second Grade Teachers **We will see you on Monday, January 4, 2016!** Reading/Writing Workshop As we conclude 2015, we also “wrapped up” our poetry unit. Students completed several versions of poems and were able to publish a collection of their work. Students enjoyed learning about Shel Silverstein and were able to celebrate this author with many comprehension activities. We also enjoyed reading holiday stories and giving written responses. Continue to read over vacation because… Children that read become Adults that read. Math - Students worked on time this past week. We focused on telling time to the nearest five minutes. This concept can be very tricky and needs lots of review. Please continue to work on this concept with your child! We will be spiraling back to money when we return from break! As a reminder, your child can access xtramath at home and this is a great reinforcement of math facts to help them in the classroom! Word Study- Second graders learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives this week in Word Study. We enjoyed playing a noun, verb, and adjective Scoot game, as well as writing our very own super sentences (containing a noun, verb, and adjective) about a snowman. *NOTE: We will be assessing students over high frequency words (reading/writing) when we return from winter break. Social Studies/Holiday Craft- Our “Holidays Around the World” rotation came to an end on Monday. The students loved learning about a variety of holidays/cultures and the traditions that go along with each. We also read two Scholastic News articles titled, “Eat Up Bear!” and “Green All Winter.” This week, second graders worked very hard on a special craft for you! They are very excited to give you their holiday gift! Enjoy, and we wish you a happy holiday!
