Second Grade News Thursday, Feb.25,2016 Feb.26 - No School - Teacher Work Day March 3 - Second Grade Play at 7pm. March 11 - Cosi Field Trip March 21 - 25 -Spring Break Reading/Writing Workshop Students have continued to read and experience a variety of versions of Cinderella from different cultures. We have been able to identify main parts of the story and take notes. We have also discussed how the similarities and difference throughout each adaptation create unique circumstances and plots. During Writing Workshop, Students are writing of their own version of Cinderella. Using the “story” of Cinderella, students are incorporating their own elements and juicy details to make the story unique. Students are encouraged to utilize classroom resources to brainstorm, develop, organize, write, edit and publish a piece of writing they are proud to share. Math In math this week, students took out their rulers and began measuring! You may have noticed an interest in measurement from your child this week. Students enjoyed measuring different objects in the classroom and even measuring each other for a rich task problem! On Thursday, students completed a math assessment over measurement. We will be spiraling back to skip counting next week. Students will be asked to begin skip counting at different starting points and determining the skip counting pattern. Word Study Second graders took time to work on their Leadership Notebooks this week. We began by filling out our new Leadership Job Application for the 3trimester. Students had to choose their top 5 jobs and state a reasonable reason why they would be good at those jobs. We also updated reading levels, Developmental Spelling Inventory Levels (DSI), and our High Frequency Words. All students now also know their personal reading and spelling goal to get to where they need to be by the end of the school year. rd Science We began a new unit of Forces of Motion this week! Students began the week by charting what they know and want to learn about Forces of Motion. We brainstormed items in our classroom that move and learned the following new vocabulary words force, motion, energy, push, pull, roll, and slide. Students had a blast using shaving cream to draw different paths such as zig-zag, straight, circular, and diagonal. We ended the week by completing a “Playground Lab” report where students stated different recess equipment and if they have to push or pull to use it. We will continue this unit next week.
