TheCouncilonInternationalEducationalExchange(CIEE)andtheUniversityof
PennsylvaniaGraduateSchoolofEducation’sCenterforMinorityServing
Institutions(CMSI)havepartneredinanefforttoincreasetheopportunitiesfor
themostfinanciallychallengedstudentsfromthenation’snearly600Minority
ServingInstitutions(MSIs).
CIEEhaspledged100%ofallexhibitorfeesrelatedtoitsannualconferencein
2016,2017,and2018tosupportstudyabroadscholarshipsforstudentsfrom
MSIs.Eachyearforthenextthreeyears,thescholarshipfundswillcover100
percentofprogramfeesandtravelcostsfor10studentsfromMSIs.Each
cohortof10studentswilltakepartinasummerstudyabroadprogram
designedtoenhancetheirleadershipandinterculturalskillsinoneofthree
locations:London,England(summer2017);CapeTown,SouthAfrica(summer
2018);andSeoul,SouthKorea(summer2019).TheCMSIwillawardthestudy
abroadscholarshipsannuallybasedonacombinationoffinancialneed,
academicachievement,andnominationsfromstudents’MSIpresidents.
ThescholarshipisnamedinhonorofFrederickDouglass—theAfricanAmericansocialreformer,abolitionist,orator,writer,andinternational
statesman—tohighlightthecharacteristicsthattoday’syoungleadersneed
most:akeenintellect,astrongworkethic,andaglobalperspective.Consistent
withDouglass’legacy,FrederickDouglassGlobalFellowsaremeritorious
individualswhodemonstratehighacademicachievement,possessexemplary
communicationskills,displaythehallmarksofself-determination,exhibit
characteristicsofboldleadership,andhaveahistoryofservicetoothers.In
thespiritofoneofAmerica’smostpowerfulintellectuals,communicators,and
scholars,FrederickDouglassGlobalFellowscommittosharingtheirexperience
andinterculturalgrowthwithpeersandclassmatesbefore,during,andafter
thefellowship.
TheFrederickDouglassGlobalFellowshipseekstobreakdownthebarriersof
cost,curriculum,andculturetomakestudyabroadaccessibletostudentsfrom
MSIs.
