THE COMPOSITION CLASSES What They Are and When They’re Offered Almost every Methodist University student will take at least one composition class, and most students will take two or three. The main composition classes are ENG 1000, ENG 1010, and ENG 1020. ENG 2070 (Reviewing Writing) is for transfer students who have taken the equivalent of 1010 at another institution but have not passed the English Placement Exam. Any student may take ENG 2070, however, and students needing to strengthen their writing skills are encouraged to do so. ENG 1000 Skills Development in English focuses primarily on: • • • • grammar (The Dirty Dozen) sentence structure paragraph structure short essays ENG 1010 Composition focuses on: • • • • the continuation of skills learned in ENG 1000 longer essays organization and support research and documentation ENG 1020 Composition and Introduction to Literature focuses on: • • • • the continuation of skills learned in ENG 1010 poetry fiction drama Your ENG 1020 professor may also choose to include one or more of the following: • • • • novels critical theory memoirs graphic novels ENG 2070 focuses on: • • English 1010 skills 200-level course expectations
