Walker-Andrews Chair Lodmell called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. The minutes from 11/10/09 were approved. Communication The curriculum consent agenda was approved by the Faculty Senate. There were no questions. The Academic Strategic Plan was eventually endorsed with a vote of 37 to 11. Many of the concerns will be dealt with during implementation. A large number of faculty will be needed to serve on implementation committees. Business Items: Education and Fine Arts Professor Luckowski received addition forms and revisions to the proposed BFA and BA modification for Media Arts. The subcommittee reviewed them and recommends approval. The following items were approved. There are still concerns regarding FOR 452 and 453. It was suggested that the courses be offered for 2 credits and the level be reduced to 300. Unfortunately there are no guidelines for field study or study abroad courses. One model is for students to have preliminary readings or even a course prior to traveling. ASCRC may want to establish guidelines. Some disciplines may have accreditation requirements pertaining to field study that can provide some guidance. Typically one week in the field is given 1 credit. Health Professions MED 154 Beginning Medical Terminology Wilderness Studies RSCN Conservation Ecology 271N Delete Change the title of the course from “Issues in Wilderness Ecology” Psychology Level II Bioethics certificate Both Forestry and Biomedical Science and Social Science Subcommittees reviewed the proposed Bioethics Certificate. The proposal had 21 letters of support. The faculty will be teaching the online courses as overload. Because of this, it was questioned whether the program will be sustainable and whether this was a concern of ASCRC. After a program is established it creates an expectation of service. The item was approved with one member apposed. Humanities The items below were approved. Modern and Classical Languages FRCH 307 French Study Abroad Preparation Philosophy Program Update upper-division writing Modification requirement catalog language Social Science Delete The items below were approved. Follow-up is still pending for ANTH 402 and 446. The proposed AA in licensed Addiction Counselor Studies was not approved. In order to become licensed students must complete 100 hours in a supervised setting and there is no provision for this in the program. Subcommittee Chair Tangedahl is still waiting for a response on BUS 238. This course might be a candidate for common course numbering, in which case the T would not be required. Business Technology Program Medical Information Modification Technology/Medical Administrative Assisting Journalism JOUR 288 Diversity in Media JOUR 481 UG Ethics and Trends in News Media Management & Marketing MKTG 450 Marketing Connections Update required courses New course (changed number from 290) Change title from Senior Seminar and drop G designation New Course Associate Provost Walker- Andrews will be meeting with the College of Technology Dean and Associate Dean to discuss various issues. It seems many COT students are required to take courses on the main campus and this needs to be monitored. She has requested some data to study which students are taking courses where. There also needs to be a discussion regarding duplication of courses between the campuses. There is an experimental course in the spring course schedule that uses an existing course title in Psychology. This is confusing for students and may have other implications. The committee discussed the proposed MIS / America’s Professor Courses. The Real Estate course (previously FIN 321) has been granted credit through Continuing Education since summer of 2005. Most of the students are from the outside. The request to crosslist with the BADM has been dropped- the rubric is no longer in use. According to UM Online rigor in an online course should be the same as a traditional course. Professor Morton has not completed the training for online instructors and is likely not aware of the Principles of Quality for Online Courses. ASCRC is concerned that the courses do not fit in a program within the School of Business. A more appropriate home would be in the College of Technology Business Technology Department. One of the missions of the COT is to meet community needs. The committee would like to hear from Academic Affairs prior to making a decision. Good and Welfare: Professor Knight inquired about the process for approval of course fees. Some of the Film Studies courses would like to have the option of showing films in the UC Theatre, but there is a charge. The course fee requests are administered by Administration and Finance who takes them to the Board of Regents for approval. The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
