Welcome!
Kids College is our summer enrichment series which offers
unique workshops for rising 2nd – 12th graders that are designed
to teach new skills, develop new interests and hobbies, and
explore future career opportunities.
Included in this brochure are all the program descriptions with
dates, times and ages. Please read everything thoroughly as you
make selections, and carefully complete all the necessary
paperwork. Many of our programs have limited enrollment, and
applications are processed according to the date they are
received.
PLEASE NOTE: We have courses that will be held OFFSITE…
not at the Workforce Center… for some classes, you are to take your child to the offsite location and pick them
up there. For others, the Kids College shuttle will be available to students. All those courses are well-marked in
the catalog, so please make sure you and your child know where their favorite classes are going to be held and
how they are going to get there!
If you need additional information or have any questions, please contact the Kids College office at 757-569-6700 for
assistance. Thank you for your interest in Kids College and we look forward to another outstanding, fun-filled summer!
See you this summer!

They're creepy. They're crawly. They're
bitey. They're millions strong and an
essential part of life on earth. There are
more different kinds of insects in the world
than all other living things combined. Some
are so small that we need a microscope to
see them and others are so large they
won't fit in a coffee can. Join us in
discovering how to identify, collect,
display, and present information about
insects (and other select arthropods) and learn about the
economic and ecological importance of these crawly critters.
This workshop is offered in partnership with the
Southampton County office of Virginia Cooperative
Extension.
Focus on the science of forensics in this
hands-on look at crime scenes. Identify and collect evidence,
from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Recreate the scene of a
crime using clues and detailed observations. Become a super
sleuth and learn clever ways of performing tasks in the hands-on
view of the science that spies use. From decoding messages to
metal detectors and night vision, campers will have the
opportunity to check out spy equipment and discover the
technological tools of detection. This workshop offered in
partnership with Mad Science of Hampton Roads.

So What is a Reality Fair, Anyway?
An important goal of credit unions is to provide financial
education to their members in order to help them better
manage their money on a day-to-day basis as well as direct
funds to savings for the future. How to budget, how to look for
the best prices, how to stay out of or at least manage debt—it’s a
learning process that all of us have gone through. With the
products and services that credit unions offer, members can
take steps to control their financial lives not only for today, but
also for tomorrow. An excellent way to accomplish this is to
help our youth understand the workings of earning and
spending, budgeting, and saving. Developing financial
understanding at an early age instills good financial habits to
carry throughout a lifetime.

The Reality Fair is a hands-on experience in which students,
after identifying their career choice and starting salaries, are
provided a budget sheet requiring them to live within their
monthly salary while paying for
basics such as housing, utilities,
transportation, clothing, and
food. And some not-so-basics
like entertainment and travel.
Along the way there are many
temptations for additional
spending, and students must
learn to balance their wants and
needs to potentially live on their
own. After they have visited the
various booths covering
components of independent
living, students will balance
their budget, and then sit down
with a financial counselor to review their standing. The Reality
Fair is a unique opportunity for each student to experience
some of the financial challenges they will face when they start
life on their own.
Have you ever wanted to gaze into a crystal ball and see what it
will be like when you are all grown up? Do you want to be the
next Lebron James, RG III, or Jimmy Johnson? Do you dream to
be an astronaut with NASA or a doctor that heals the sick? Do
you think it would be great to be just like your favorite teacher?
Where will you live… what will you drive… where will you go to
college? Come experience a “reality” fair to see how you can
become a millionaire! This workshop offered in partnership
with Bronco Federal Credit Union.
We thank Bronco Federal Credit Union for
providing this excellent opportunity for our
Kids College students!
