UNCTAD Regional Workshop on Productive Capacities, Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in
African LDCs: Meeting the Challenges of the Crisis in the Least Developed Countries through
International Support Mechanisms
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 13–15 April 2011
As part of its initiatives to disseminate the findings of its Least Developed Countries Report,
UNCTAD’s Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC) is organizing
a series of regional workshops on “Productive Capacities, Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction”. The
first such workshop, for East and Southern African LDCs, was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 22–23
February 2007. The second workshop, for Central and West African LDCs, was held in Dakar, Senegal, 27–
28 February 2008. The third workshop, for Asian LDCs, was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 28–30
October 2008. The fourth workshop, for African LDCs, will take place at the United Nations Economic
Commission of Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 13–15 April 2011.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for UNCTAD to share its knowledge about economic
development and poverty reduction in LDCs and to learn from the experiences of LDCs with poverty
reduction strategies. The workshop is intended to stimulate fresh thinking about development strategies and
poverty reduction in the LDCs among both LDC governments and their development partners. For a more
detailed description, please refer to the attached Aide Mémoire.
UNCTAD is inviting representatives from LDCs and donor countries, and international as well as
regional development agencies. We would like to invite one expert from your country, who has played, or is
expected to play, a significant role in the formulation or implementation of national development strategies
or poverty reduction strategies. This expert may be a member of your Government or staff of relevant
ministries; s/he should also be cognizant of national development or poverty reduction strategies. UNCTAD
is also inviting the focal points for the Enhanced Integrated Framework for Trade-related Technical
Assistance for LDCs from the African LDCs.
We would be grateful if you could assist us with the identification of the expert from the relevant
ministry and provide us with his/her contact details, including full name, title, address, phone number,
e-mail address, date of birth and a copy of his/her passport. UNCTAD will fund the participation of the
expert with a least costly round trip air ticket by the most direct route to Addis Ababa plus daily subsistence
allowance (DSA) from 12–15 April 2011, plus an extra day to cover miscellaneous expenses, i.e. visa fee,
local transportation, telephone calls, etc., in accordance with the United Nations financial rules and
regulations.
In order for us to proceed with the organizational aspects of the workshop, we would be grateful if you
could send us the details by e-mail to Mrs. Corazon Yance-Roberts at corazon.yance.roberts@unctad.org or
by fax: +41 22 917 0046 as soon as possible, but no later than 3 March 2011.
