contains the forms you need to complete to apply for the class and some information about the program. If

THE JOB
The health care field offers many job opportunities in a variety of challenging environments. The
medication aide works in assisted living facilities, group homes, adult day care centers, and correctional
facilities. Medication aides work under the supervision of the nursing and medical staff. The job is tough
and demanding. Medication aides care for both the physical and psychological needs of their patients.
THE CLASSES
The HCT 115 class includes both classroom and clinical training. The clinical training takes place at area
assisted living facilities.
During the fall and spring semesters, HCT 115 class is taught two days (morning or afternoon) a week for
2 ½ hours each day. The class is offered on the Franklin campuses, if there are enough students applying
for the classes.
THE APPLICATION AND ELIGIBILITY
All submissions go to the Nursing Office (Address on cover sheet)
1. You must submit 2 applications:
a. An application to the College
b. An application to the Nursing Department to take the Medication Aide class
2. You must submit 1 official transcripts to verify your graduation from high school or GED scores and any
college to the Nursing Office.
3. You must have a GPA of 2.0 or above in your most recent education experience (high school, college, or other
educational facility)
4. You must
a. have already completed a nurse aide, patient care partner, or direct care provider courses and
b. provide documentation of successful completion (you do not have to be certified).
c. Scores on the Paul D. Camp Community College Placement test indicating readiness for English 111 and
no developmental English requirements.
5. You must be in good health and capable of strenuous lifting.
6. You must provide an up-to-date documentation of your immunization status.
7. There are some classes that you would be unable to complete if you have a felony conviction. You should also
be aware that some convictions will prevent licensure by the state and employment in the health care field.

Steps for preparing to take the Medication Aide course:
1. Submit an application to the College. Submit a new one if you applied more than 3 years ago or if you need
to update your personal information (address, phone number, etc).
2. Submit your application for the Medication Aide course (included in this information packet) to the nursing
office on the Franklin campus. The address is: The Nursing Office, Room 136K, Paul D. Camp
Community College, Box 737, 100 North College Drive, Franklin, Virginia 23851-2422.
3. Take the College placement tests that are required of all College students. Call or go to any of the three
admissions offices to make an appointment to take the testing. Testing is done several times a month on
each campus. For the Franklin Campus call 569-6707 or 6722. For the Suffolk Hobbs Campus, call 9256312 or 6313; and Smithfield Center, call 925-6340.
4. Take developmental classes.
a. To ensure that each student has the proper educational basis to succeed in the Medication Aide course,
students must take any recommended ENG developmental courses.
b. If developmental courses in mathematics are needed, it is strongly recommended they be taken if the
student intends to pursue higher education. A higher level of mathematics is required for those students
who wish to pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in this area.
c. For further information, talk with a counselor. It is important that developmental courses are completed
as quickly as possible so that the student will be appropriately prepared to pursue this program of study.
5. Stay in touch with the Nursing Office. Your application will be reviewed by the College’s nursing faculty
and staff. You will be notified by the Nursing Office when your application is approved so that you can
register for the Medication Aide class.
6. When you receive approval to register for the class, you should also make an appointment with your
physician to get the physical examination and records of immunizations required to participate in the class.
The forms you need will be mailed to you with your letter of admission to the class.

Class Sequencing
Registration for HCT 115 equals 3 credits. EMT 109 is a one credit course. Thus, unless you have current CPR
training at the appropriate level, you will need to pay for 4 credits at the current in state tuition rate of $144.65
per credit hour. Or 4 credits times $339.25 out-of-state tuition rate.
