FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DREXEL UNIVERSITY TO HOST
CONVERSATION ON TITLE IX and SEXUAL MISCONDUCT
PHILADELPHIA (Sept. 10, 2012) - Drexel University College of Medicine’s
Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership (IWHL) in partnership with the
University’s Athletic Department will host a panel discussion, “Beyond Athletics:
A Conversation About Title IX and Sexual Misconduct,” on Friday, Sept. 28, 4:005:15 p.m., at Drexel University’s Recreation Center. The Conversation is a program
of the IWHL’s Vision 2020, a national initiative to advance women’s economic and
social equality.
Title IX, part of 1972 federal legislation that bans sex discrimination at educational
institutions, has opened opportunities for millions of women and girls to participate
in sports over the past 40 years. Title IX’s application today includes prohibiting
sexual misconduct on campuses and encouraging gender equity in STEM (science,
technology, engineering, math) education fields.
Lynn Yeakel, Vision 2020 Co-Chair and IWHL Director at Drexel University
College of Medicine, will serve as moderator.
Panelists include:
 Terry L. Fromson, Managing Attorney for the Women’s Law Project
 Lurline Jones, retired girls’ basketball coach at University City High School
 Asiya S. Mahmud, 2012 Drexel alumna and member of its women's crew
 Gina Maisto Smith, Partner, Ballard Spahr LLP
 Eric Zillmer, Ph.D., Director of Athletics at Drexel University
“We are very pleased to work with Dr. Zillmer in presenting an open discussion
about the opportunities that Title IX has provided women and girls, and what it can
mean for future generations,” said Yeakel.
The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. To register, go to
