SaVe Act
Understanding the Campus SaVe Act and
Methodist University
The Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act is a
new law affecting all colleges and Universities in the
United States. It was enacted in 2013 and is intended
to help protect students from sexual violence and
harassment. An amendment to the Clery Act,
the Campus SaVe Act focuses on prevention and
awareness regarding sexual misconduct and related
offenses.
Methodist University prohibits the offenses of
domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault,
and stalking. All such reported offenses will
be investigated and appropriate action taken in
accordance with law and University policy.
Definitions of Criminal Offenses under
the SaVe Act and by the State of NC
Domestic Violence and Dating Violence:
Causing or attempting to cause bodily injury to
a current or former spouse, someone you live
with, a parent, child, grandparent or grandchild,
someone you have a child with, someone you live
with or formerly lived with or someone you are
romantically involved with over time and on a
continuing basis.
Sexual Assault: A person commits sexual assault
or sexual battery if that person: engages in a
sexual act (including touching) by force and
against the will of another person or engages in
a sexual act (including touching) with a person
who is mentally incapacitated or otherwise
helpless or engages in a sexual act with a child.
Stalking: Occurs when a person willfully, and on
more than one occasion, harasses another person
or engages in a course of conduct which: causes
that other person to fear for their safety or the
safety of their family or which causes substantial
emotional distress.
