www.pdcccfoundation.org www.pdc.edu Dream No Small Dreams: PDCCC’s New GED Scholarship A ngela McQuillia’s 20-year dream is about to come true thanks to her determination, hard work, and PDCCC’s new GED and Adult Education Scholarship. Angela, a mother of four, dropped out of high school and held many jobs over the years, learning the value of hard work and the importance of an education. After earning her GED, Angela enrolled at PDCCC, studying for an associate degree in business administration. Within just a few credit hours of Angela McQuillia, graduating, Angela was almost overwhelmed by the Scholarship recipient cost of tuition and supporting her family. “Dr. Alan Harris and Dean Trina Jones told me not to give up,” said Angela. “They turned to a brand new scholarship that helps recent GED recipients overcome the financial barriers to higher education.” This scholarship will enable Angela to graduate this May! “I cried when they told me about the scholarship. All I needed was to take one class,” Angela said. “So many in our community dream about going to college,” says PDCCC Interim President Dr. Bill Aiken. “We are in the business of making dreams come true. Our counselors, deans and advisors have a vested interest in making it happen.” “This scholarship,” says Dr. Aiken, “gives deserving students a boost, paying for classes, books, computers, transportation, whatever they need to get an education.” Help make dreams a reality. Camp Community College Foundation that also works for your family. TOD, or Transfer on Death, transfers title to real property or certain bank accounts effective with the owner’s death. It can pass property directly to a beneficiary, without adding to the costs and delays of probate. An Example: Miriam is 70 years old, and owns 200 acres in her own name. Her will passes all of her assets to her husband, but they decide that these 200 acres should go directly to their two grown children. Miriam asks her lawyer to draft a TOD deed transferring this acreage to her children, and to record the deed properly. Through this deed, the children will take full title once Miriam dies. Miriam can still sell the property, or revoke this deed by recording a cancellation or a later TOD deed. TOD can ease the transfer of bank accounts or real estate in many situations: • Miriam would like for her unmarried sister to inherit the land if she is still living. A TOD deed could pass the land to Jane if she is living, or to PDCCC Foundation as an alternative if she is not. • A TOD is well suited for transfers to charitable organizations like PDCCC Foundation, which, unlike individuals, is all but certain to be in existence when the owner dies. • Miriam can use the TOD deed to divide ownership among several heirs. If PDCCC Foundation were one, then its share of the tract could be divided and sold when the time comes.
