www.pdcfoundation.org www.pdc.edu Legacy Gifts – Paying it Forward When Randy Betz and Barbara Mease began to consider a planned gift to Paul D. Camp Community College, they reflected upon the opportunities they had personally experienced in their local community. Both Randy and Barbara attributed many of their good fortunes to the contributions made by the family of Paul Douglas Camp to the region. Randy transitioned from his career Planning a Legacy – Reflecting a Life The decision to make a legacy gift often proceeds from personal reflection during the overall planning process. When adult children help elderly parents in formulating effective estate plans, consideration of a charitable legacy can be one of the more fulfilling parts of the process. at Union Camp Corporation and International Paper to Paul D. Camp Community College, institutions bearing the Camp family name. As Founder and Executive Director of the Texie Camp Marks Children’s Center, Barbara experienced first-hand the generosity of the Camp Family Foundations through their funding to establish and maintain the Center. “The spirit of philanthropy exemplified by the Camp family inspired our decision to give back to the community,” said Randy. “The Virginia Community College System has readily available and affordable educational and training opportunities that help members of our community improve their lives, which made our choice to give to Paul D. Camp Community College a natural one.” Randy, who currently serves as Vice President of Workforce Development, is proud of Paul D. Camp Community College’s role in the community. When International Paper closed its Franklin Mill in 2010, he was able to help his former colleagues obtain new skills and new careers. By naming Paul D. Camp Community College as a beneficiary in their estate planning process, Randy and Barbara have ensured that the College will continue to touch more lives in their community. This team will need basic information about the property owned by the person whose plans are underway, and that person’s intentions concerning that property, including charitable legacies. This team may include: 1. The person making the plans (The “testator” if a will is being used) 2. Immediate family members (just enough to put the plan together; others with a stake can be kept informed as plans mature) 3. An estate planning lawyer (with expertise in state and federal estate taxes). 4. Anyone with special expertise recommended by that attorney. The PDCCC Foundation welcomes the opportunity to provide ideas for legacy gifts that make the maximum impact on our community. Implementing the estate plan: Get the facts together Anyone managing someone else’s affairs will need complete information on all accounts, payment arrangements, and documentation of all kinds. Much of this information will be as important for an adult child caretaker as for an executor. Caretakers/executors should have: 1. A discharge form (DD 214) for any veteran wishing military honors or burial in a military cemetery. 2. Awareness of any automatic payments drafted from the individual’s account. Families have forfeited large insurance benefits because an account was closed from which insurance premiums were drafted, causing the policy to lapse. 3. All account numbers as well as passwords for online access. 4. Knowledge of the whereabouts of all important personal papers, including a copy of the will, powers of attorney, etc. Join the Legacy Society Your legacy gift qualifies you for membership in the Foundation’s Paul D. Camp Community College Legacy Society, which honors those who include the Foundation in their estate or financial planning.
