Anecdotal Comments 2012 Graduate Survey If your overall college experience (regardless of delivery mode) was unsatisfactory, why? • I have had nothing but issues with faculty loosing important documents. Teaching outdated material such as web design courses from 1995. • For the most part it was great. I was dissatisfied with the fact that there isn’t a quiet place to study. The library is noisy as well as the student lounge. IN the lounge students play music too loud and are very distracting to others in there trying to study. I do wish there was more places to eat lunch as well. • Insufficient financial aid for DESERVING students, insufficient quiet study space, misuse and abuse of financial aid and of student lounge, abuse and misuse of school computers, ANY one is able to walk into the school (no security), overall disorganization and limited resources for deserving and hard working students. The library staff is rude, paying students should not have to PAY for copies; the computer lab is NOISY during exams. What could you not find (be as specific as possible) in the library? • Never used the library • I really didn’t have that must use in the library, but when I use it the information was there. • Specific medical subject/data • I felt that the staff was not very helpful. In fact, they were very rude. The Nursing students (most of the time) are the ONLY students ACTUALLY trying to study and other students are watching explicit videos and on their cell phone and get nothing said to them. But if I try and walk behind the counter to get something I printed for a school assignment, watch out. • I never researched in the library. I never created or used an ID card. The internet was much easier for me. The databases were pretty useful though. • Materials related to woman's history for a course I was taking. You could find an entire section for black history though. • Specific topics for research papers • I do most of my research online. • Everything I needed I found • I did not use the library. • Never used library • Never used the library • I rarely used the PDCCC library. • The online library was very difficult to find certain topics for nursing papers but the help button usually could help me. • I had to obtain some reference materials from the loan program. • Research paper. • Nothing if I didn't ask for help. • I was working on a research paper about cameras in the court room. The library did not information that I needed. I had to go to TCC to find more information. TCC did not have a lot, but I did get one book from there library. • Help • Transfer information. • Sometimes when I was studying in the library in Franklin, it was hard to find peace and quiet as the printer that the students' print to is very loud and needs to be replaced • Book on Phlebotomy • More up to date resources. • Sometimes it was closed the hours I was here. • I never used the library. • Older historical content on our local area. • I never went to the library. • Nothing. I always asked for help and got it. • When doing research for information that required government sources, I was required to go to government websites. • I used the library only a few times. I did use it to study or do homework. • The library was small and did not have a wide selection of varying topics; I found the online library difficult to use. What volunteer work have you done and how many hours per week? • NC Baptist Men's Disaster Relief Training • Western Tidewater Free Clinic 10/week • Fire department. 0-30hrs. • I am a officer in the CPA, PTK, Student Ambassadors, appointed to the 40th Anniversary Committee, Presidential Inauguration Committee. Work 10 + hours a week • I basically helped with student activity events, such as putting up and decorating the Christmas tree in the Franklin campus student lounge and also helped with the cookout events we had for the students and faculty. • 30+hours= senior centers, community health fairs, high school college nights, B/P screenings for community • Western Tidewater Free Clinic • Health screening for about 2-4 hours per week • Service Learning (30 hours) • Western Tidewater Free Health Clinic, 4-6 hr. per week • 15, soup kitchen • I helped with data entry at a charity health clinic in Suffolk. I had a total of about 48 hours added up over the course of two months so that averages to about 6 hours a week. • Work at my local state park. For just a few hours a week • Day Care volunteer for about 6 hours a week • 30 hours of service learning/community service activities through the nursing program. • Meals on Wheels at Sentara Obici (two hours on Mondays and Wednesdays) and helped with the depression screening. • Gardening 3-4 hours per week; Cleaning 5 hours per week. • I worked at a soup kitchen for 2 moths twice a week • Blood pressure drives, western tidewater free clinic, Zuni Presbyterian home. 1 hr per week • Childcare (5 hours a week) • I had volunteer 40 something hours during the nursing program out in community • I have completed 15 hours of service learning hours by volunteering at blood drives, at educational programs to introduce the sim man, and at churches doing health fairs. • EMT at Franklin Fire and Rescue Triage nurse at Western Tidewater Free Clinic • Student Ambassador Coat drive etc more than 5 hours • Blood pressure screenings, community health fairs, meals on wheels • With different organizations throughout the program • 50 hours in two years • Isle of Wight Animal Control. Taking care of the animals. Six hours per week. • I have done community service volunteer work on my own and with my High School. About an hour a week. • Service learning hours 30 hours in 5 semesters • While a resident of Suffolk I volunteered at the Salvation Army and the former Homeless Shelter. Hours varied per month but were about 5 hours. • SGA • I have participated in a variety of community service projects ranging from blood drives to teaching projects • Edmarc Hospice Nansemond River High School Hoffler Creek time varies from two hours-eight hours, or more a week • There were not many opportunities that I felt like. • Phlebotomy student with 120 hours • Vol. at Tidewater Free Clinic • Child care.... 10 hours a week • 50 hours and it varies, was a degree requirement • Western Tidewater Free Clinic 18 hrs • Health teachings regarding tuberculosis; blood pressure screenings; and fundraising of food items. Usually 5 hours per month. • The SGA • I assisted with the food drive by donating food, however I wish there were more opportunities at the school. • I tutor students in three of my classes. I do so about three times a week for about three to six hours each week. • I participated in Service learning projects for LPN-RN Bridge. I met/ exceeded requirement of 15 hours. • Service learning projects for the LPN-Rn bridge program. We had to complete 15+ hours for the program. Volunteered at health fairs at local churches and other facilities. • I work with a church to provide help for shut-in parishioners and I worked with the Salvation Army. The total amount of time was approximately sixty hours. • I have completed over 30 hours of community service at various facilities and events including Healthy Women's Group, Western Tidewater Free Clinic, Zuni Presbyterian Homes and teaching for Upward Bound Students. What suggestions do you have to improve the quality of College services? • Create an office of student transfer services. • More classes offered • People who are not currently enrolled should not be in the student lounge nor using our resources. • Make it so that classes are sure to be offered and open. Try to offer each class at each campus or distance learning for people living long distances from each campus. • The online practical reasoning class is a bit unorganized and confusing. • I would suggest, that PDCC staff approach to the educational openness atmosphere to be more oriented to asking questions of the student's opinion on topics of the course curriculum and get their opinions on the material, which would set a more relax class environment for learning different views. • Inform ALL office and library works they are customer service reps....some people in the offices are rude and make you feel like you’re a bother every time you go in for help or question. Not the counselors or financial aid but the administration secretaries in Franklin and the older lady at the Suffolk library. • Have more study areas. Many of the students use the "lounge" to lounge. And as many of the students are trying to study-- it’s distracting. • To know more about what the students wants to do with their future careers • Improve your placement tests... Back when I took that test I was placed into pre-calculus, but I was terrible at math, and had to drop pre-calculus and add developmental algebra. In addition to that the test placed me into developmental writing but my writing skills at the time were already very solid. There is one other thing, Improve the developmental courses if possible, I was forced to take several developmental courses and the classes were full of a bunch of immature brats who couldn't keep their mouths shut, In the case of developmental algebra those immature brats made it so I could never hear the teacher speaking during a lecture, and I had to repeat the course! Crack down on those people would ya'?! After developmental and placement testing everything was great. • Staff in the Library needs to be quiet and friendly • I had a bad experience in the admissions office with transferring credits from previous college I attended. I ended up having to contact the dean after going in multiple times without having any progress with my paperwork and having a deadline in which I needed the credits transferred in due to my degree program. • Teach updated materials, have teachers who answer questions when asked, have employees who do their jobs and don’t loose documents related to your enrollment. • I really enjoyed my time at PDCCC any and everything I need I found • Need more access to lab rooms when school is open, but door is locked. • Make the times of classes more flexible and make more courses completely online. • More security, quiet study areas, discourage abuse of the system, offer more financial resources for deserving students. Barnes and Noble should NOT have been able to raise the price of Kaplan for nursing students who had already been enrolled a year and a half. It's ridiculous that they were allowed to charge 15% just to collect our money. Also ridiculous that students can receive free nooks on financial aid while others struggle to get by. Students in the library were allowed to be on facebook and other sites and students in the student lounge were allowed to blast music. There was no quiet place to study. • My experience at this college is that the professors and adjunct staff are all very welcoming and have a true love of learning. Everyone that I have encountered has gone above and beyond to ensure that I will succeed in all of my classes. It has been a wonderful experience. I have always felt welcome and encouraged to do my best. • Offer more career programs. For example, Medical Assisting. • More hands on activities • I think you should have a Student Study Lab with tutors available. I transferred from Cecil Community College in Maryland to PDCCC and they had one.. .It was great! • A major face lift and advertisement • Try to stress to students, time management when it comes to school work and studying are very important. • More Student Support Services activities. • Some teachers here are not very helpful. • Have someone in office to answers questions went the director is out of town. • The faculty in the nursing program were wonderful. Some of the faculty in the main office were not helpful. • Larger Facility • The college services I received were adequate for my needs. I should have taken those services more thoroughly. • My suggestion is to have nicer people in the Admission office I think people are kind of rude. • Positive attitude • Encourage more students to stay in college and make something out of themselves. • Continue to improve interdepartmental communication. I think it would be great if there was more tutoring programs available and I would love to see more paid internship and/or placement, especially from the technical side. • Possibly hire more professors for each subject, especially for the Chemistry 111 class; there should be more choices in professors. • The Core Competency Testing schedule is inconvenient for working adults and evening testing should be offered. • Do not change grading criteria during the middle of the program. Changing the passing grade from a 75 to 80 was ridiculous and was not fair to the graduating class of 2012. We enrolled in the program agreeing on having a 75 to pass and we should have been grandfathered in. • Provide more classes for students in Smithfield. • More student group clubs to get the students more involved and to allow for interaction. • More hands-on activities • Make sure classes are not duplicating work. • Some Professors need to be more helpful to the students and more willing to help with assignments. • More knowledgeable staff • Offer more courses and let every course be available more than one semester. • Stay focus, Stay ahead of school work, Do not get behind, and Follow your goals • More advertising about courses offered • Lower fees • Offer more classes. More guidance counselors. Students need more guidance when setting up classes for each semester. There are not enough advisors either, at least not at Paul D Camp.
