Anecdotal Comments 2014 Graduates Why was your college experience unsatisfactory? It was beyond satisfactory; it was a university education at a community college price! The non-teaching staff are nearly all of the lowest quality possible. Most of them are completely inept at their job and have no clue what is going on. Even some of the teaching staff put in as little effort as possible. Did not have necessary resources to do hands on training in the class room I love Paul D. Camp What could you not find (be as specific as possible) in the library? Physical books Never went to the library Always found information needed Limited information in the library and sometime on the web I found everything I could always find everything in the library Particular books dealing with specific subjects If I forgot my textbook at home and needed to see certain pages for my assignments, the textbooks were sometimes not available. Research materials for History I found everything I needed to know I never used the library; I used it only to study I found everything I needed I never used the library. I had no problems In the online library, some articles could not be found in the format that I needed. I found everything I didn't use the library. Something on a particular hearing loss problem I rarely visited the library I found everything I needed When my Biology professor told us that we had to use the Library's online resource center, I had trouble finding information on my topic of "vasectomy". I feel they need no improvement Probably have a wellness program that will help students who want to be healthy and fit. The PDCCC should reconsider its position regarding student loans. I did not qualify financially for any grants or "free money". I did not find this information out until I had already been accepted into the nursing program. The only advice the financial aid office could give me was to "apply for a personal loan." The advantage of a student loan is that it is payable after graduation when you better able to afford to pay it because you have become gainfully employed because of the degree you've earned. I am not a resident of Suffolk, Franklin, Smithfield or Isle of Wight so I did not qualify for a lot of the scholarship money that was available. A wider variety of courses dealing with international topics. More tutors Give students staff that actually care about their jobs. I found the staff members of the college to be very slack. A lot of the times that I would ask for help with my classes and what direction I should be heading they would refer me to another person that was just as slack as the first and in the end I just figured it out myself The student lounge should have hot beverages provided to the student or even in a vending machine. There should be a better chose of heather snack options. And the temperature on the Hobbs campus needs to be better regulated. The campus is too cold and it is still winter. Students cannot work in that type of environment. Asking that the staff as a whole would have a better rapport with the students. Some are not as willing to answer questions or help students that seek out the college's resources as others. Also, the college is a place of higher education and learning. This past year, I've seen things happening on campus like never before. There are people literally loitering in the halls and clogging up student lounge areas that are not there for class. They won't free internet and a place to hang out. I think it would be a great idea to look into that because it's distracting to those of us that are there to work and there are people talking loudly. and goofing around in the hallways outside our classrooms I don’t think anything should change at this school. Gear the medical office specialist certification in the direction of what is actually being used today. Most of the program are still based on paper charts and hard covered books. Offer more classes (Math) at 6:30 or 7:00pm in the evening so people who work full time can take more classes. Offer beginning Spanish classes. Everything is pretty much where it should be. One thing that I would suggest to improve the quality of College services would be to have more time for teachers to better understand the importance of students having difficulty understand material. With that said, having more time to have things explained clearer. Fire most of the staff and start over. More staff Nothing to improve A few of my professors along the way were not up to par and were lazy and frankly didn't care. It made me and my peers feel inadequate and it made us not care and feel lazy as well. Provide a clearer understanding of credits needed to graduate and insuring students are on track. I feel as though the college services are at their best the way they are now. To make the college bigger I believe that the quality of College services does not need any improvements at this time. I know that Smithfield doesn’t have the facilities of the other campuses, but we need to be recognized as a part of the PDCCC system. I feel we are treated as though we don't exist at times. I would suggest that they do not change a thing; everything is excellent. To improve the quality of College services, I think the college could offer main courses each semester, so that students don't have to wait a whole year to take a course because it's only offered in the fall or spring. Keep pushing students to further their education Take out teachers that have personal feelings of the world and impose their beliefs on others Alter the SDV courses, so where everyone will learn how to write a resume, and don't make that course so rushed.
