Drexel University College of Medicine Hahnemann University Hospital PODIATRIC SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM INTERNAL MEDICINE ROTATION Goals: This rotation will include direct participation of the resident. Training will include exposure to a variety of medical pathology in a primary care setting. Training will include, but not be limited to, treatment of patients with diabetes, rheumatologic disorders, peripheral vascular disease and geriatric pathologies. The resident will be provided training in performing complete history and physical examinations. The resident will be provided the opportunity to formulate appropriate differential diagnoses. The resident will have the opportunity to order and interpret diagnostic studies, including EKG’s, chest radiographs, and laboratory studies. Competencies: The resident will be able to demonstrate the following competencies: 1. Perform a complete medical history and physical examination 2. Order and interpret pertinent laboratory tests 3. Interpret EKG’s and chest x-rays 4. Understand all aspects of the diagnosis, clinical manifestations and management of diabetes 5. Understand the diagnostic criteria and medical management of other common conditions including, but not limited to: hypertension, thyroid disease, cardiac disease, respiratory/pulmonary disease, cancer, hematological diseases, and renal failure 6. Understand fluid and electrolyte balance 7. Formulate and implement appropriate differential diagnosis, and treatment plans of management of patient care
