Resource Conservation is an interdepartmental undergraduate major that prepares students for the diverse opportunities that now exist in environmental conservation, natural resource management, and sustainable livelihoods and communities. Students can choose a more structured area of study in the natural sciences, such as ecology or hydrology, or emphasize emerging sub-disciplines such as wildland fire management, natural resource economics, or climate and environmental change. Students can also integrate across disciplines and focus on environmental policy and natural resources planning, wilderness studies, sustainable livelihoods and community conservation, or international conservation. Additional credits in foreign languages or track/area of emphasis: The new requirement that students take 10.0 credits of foreign language OR 9.0 additional credits in their track/area of emphasis within the major codifies the change in the foreign language requirement adopted last year by the UM Faculty Senate. Some students in Resource Conservation are able to take 10.0 credits of foreign language and do not need an exemption. For those students, it is now explicit in the major requirements that they must complete the foreign language requirement. However, many Resource Conservation students need to complete additional coursework in their track/area of emphasis to ensure that they qualify for federal civil service jobs in hydrology, ecology, range management, soil science, and other fields. For example, the hydrology civil service series requires 6 credits of calculus and 6 credits of physics, coursework that is not required of all Resource Conservation students. To be competitive/marketable in these professions, students must take additional coursework and qualify under the federal civil service series relevant to their track/area of emphasis. Because these students are taking additional credits within the major, they merit an exemption under the new rule. To ensure that these students take the required credits to reach the 48.0 credit minimum (after general education courses are subtracted), we made the requirement for additional credits with the major formal. Tracks in Resource Conservation include Climate and Environmental Change, Community Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods, Ecology of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Environmental Policy and Resources Planning, International Conservation, Natural Resource Economics, Range Management and Grassland Ecology, Watershed Hydrology, Wilderness Studies, and Wildland Fire Management. Double majors: The overlap in requirements between the Resource Conservation major and other majors in the College of Forestry and Conservation meant that it was very easy for students in other CFC majors to obtain a second major in Resource Conservation. The new requirement ensures that students obtain additional depth in a specific area of Resource Conservation as part of their second major.
