I. DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM
Department of Health and Human Performance Master’s in Athletic Training
II. SUMMARY
Last year we had two new courses approved and now need to add them into the curriculum- ATEP 535:
AT Techniques II and ATEP 580: Pharmacology in Sports Medicine. In order to keep our credit
requirements the same for the program, we would like to drop AHAT 479 Topics in Sports Medicine and
one elective course offering 3 credits (students were able to choose this elective course either in or out
of department). In addition, we would like to substitute HHP 523 Case Studies in Sport Psychology for
CHTH 485 Theories of Health Behavior and Counseling. The overall credits to complete the program will
remain the same at 58 credits.

VI. JUSTIFICATION
To meet the required competencies and proficiencies outlined by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic
Training Education, we needed to include two more courses (ATEP 535 and ATEP 580) to appropriately address
content previously not addressed or was minimally addressed. When examining our exit survey data on
assessment, content that will be covered in these new courses were previously identified as areas of weakness;
therefore, we are being proactive in trying to better prepare our students in these content areas. These course
additions will significantly enhance our curriculum and preparedness of our students to successfully pass the Board
of Certification Exam and enter the profession of athletic training. The decision to remove AHAT 479 (Topics in
Sports Medicine) as a required course was largely decided because there were no longer any competencies or
proficiencies tied to that course (with the addition of the General Medical Conditions course, this covers those
educational competencies). This course could still be taken for elective credit within our program if a student
chooses to do so. Switching out HHP 523 for CHTH 485 allows our students to work more specifically on
educational competencies associated with athletic training and HHP 523 is now designed specifically for athletic
training students; whereas CHTH 485 included students from Health Enhancement, Community Health as well as
athletic training (the instructor of that course worked very hard to integrate material relevant to athletic training,
but this was challenging as that course has significantly grown and is really geared more for community health
students.) To keep the overall credit requirement the same for the program, we have dropped one elective course
from the required curriculum.
