Change the title of the degree program to Ecosystem Science and Restoration (ESR). We have submitted a Level 1 Program Form separately, but are including this change here as many of the changes below result from this change. 2. Change the titles of courses that have the degree name in their title (NRSM344, 495, 494) so that the new degree name is in the title. 3. Allow students to choose between NRSM465 Restoration Ecology and BIOE447 Ecosystem Ecology. 4. Change elective choices to:  remove courses that are no longer offered  NRSM 455 Riparian Ecol. and Mgmt.;  BIOM 430 Applied & Environ. Change the title of the degree program to Ecosystem Science and Restoration (ESR)  Justification: provided in the Level 1 Program Proposal. 2. Change all titles that have the degree name in their title  Changes will be made to the following (Course modification forms have been submitted): i. Change NRSM344 from Ecological Restoration Capstone to Ecosystem Science and Restoration Capstone ii. Change NRSM495 from Ecological Restoration Practicum to Ecosystem Science and Restoration Practicum iii. Change NRSM494 from Ecological Restoration Seminar to Ecosystem Science and Restoration Capstone Seminar iv. Change the title of the program electives list from Restoration Electives to Ecosystem Science and Restoration Electives  Justification: This degree program includes a three‐course field‐learning sequence (NRSM 344, 495, and 494). The courses have the title of the major in their titles. The program has submitted a Level 1 Program Modification form to change the title of the major to “Ecosystem Science and Restoration” to better reflect program content. Accordingly, we are requesting to change the titles of all three courses (NRSM 344, 495, and 494) in the field learning experience for our majors. We are also requesting to change the name the program uses to refer to its elective list 3. Allow students to choose between NRSM465 Restoration Ecology (taught by Nelson) and BIOE447 Ecosystem Ecology (taught by Colman).  Justification: This change will allow students to choose between advanced training in restoration science and ecosystem science.  Restoration Ecology will continue to be taught every year, to accommodate students in both the major and minor. However, allowing some majors to take Ecosystem Ecology instead of Restoration Ecology will help control enrollment, which has been increasing.  Ecosystem Ecology will be taught every other year. There are suitable options for a course substitution for students who end up with scheduling difficulties due to the every‐other‐year offering; substitutions would be handled on an individual basis through petitions. 4. Change elective choices to:  remove courses that are no longer offered: NRSM 455 Riparian Ecol. and Mgmt. and BIOM 430 Applied & Environ. Microbiology. Justification: this will save students time by avoiding having them search for courses that do not exist.  add courses currently required in the curriculum but that would be elective when this proposal is adopted: NRSM 465 Restoration Ecology and BIOE 447 Ecosystem Ecology. Justification: These two courses meet the intention of the electives in this program and would be valuable for all students to take. VII. Ecosystem Science and Aquatic Ecological Restoration The major B.S. in Ecosystem Science and Restoration prepares students to tackle the complex challenges associated with understanding and repairing degraded ecosystems. Students can select one of two options: the Terrestrial Option, which focuses on the repair of terrestrial ecosystems including forests and grasslands; and the Aquatic Option, which focuses on stream and , wetland ecosystems, and groundwater restoration. Both options provide in‐depth training in the ecosystem and restoration science of restoration ecology and the management activities and human dimensions of restoration practice. Students engage in field‐based learning, contribute to cutting‐edge research and restoration projects, and are challenged to apply ecological theory to restoration practice. The major requires completion of a nine‐credit restoration capstone, during which students gain hands‐on real‐world experience in research, monitoring, or planning and implementing restoration projects in partnership with natural resource management agencies and organizations in western Montana. A degree in Ecosystem Science andWildland Restoration prepares students for careers as provides students with the knowledge and training needed to work restoration practitioners with non‐profit, private, or governmental natural resource agencies and to attend for graduate school in ecology or natural resource management. Students who graduate with this major may qualify for the following federal civil service jobs: biological technician (Series 0404), ecologist (Series GS‐408), forester (Series G‐460), hydrologist (Series GS‐1315) and soil conservationist (Series GS‐457).
