Changing Biology degree from B.A. to B.S at the University of Montana – Mountain campus

Item info The degree name for students taking the recommended curriculum for the biology major at the
University of Montana – Mountain campus in the options of Cellular & Molecular Biology, Ecology &
Organismal Biology, Genetics & Evolution, Field Ecology, and Human Biological Sciences shall be changed
from a Bachelor of Arts to a Bachelor of Science. No change in required or recommended courses is
needed to implement the requested change.
EXPLANATION
Item Explanation Based on student demand and a review of similar Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology
at other Universities, the faculty in the Division of Biological Sciences request that the current Bachelor of
Arts degree in Biology be changed to a Bachelor of Science degree for five of our current eight options
(specifically: Cellular & Molecular Biology, Ecology & Organismal Biology, Genetics & Evolution, Field
Ecology, and Human Biological Sciences). The Bachelor of Science degree is appropriate for the five named
options because of the intensive cognate requirements in science (chemistry, physics, math, statistics) and
a greater number of required courses in biology.
