Program Modification Form
I Summary of Proposed Changes
Music/ Bachelor of Music
Department/program
The National Association of Schools of Music, our accrediting agency, has
Summary
required that we add instruction in the area of World Music to our
curriculum. MUSI 207X World Music, a course that introduces students
to the musics of other cultures is the appropriate course to require for our
BM students. This course would not add credits to the degree, but would
simply require the class and at the same time meet the General Education
requirements in the Indigenous and Global Perspective category.

describe
Require MUSI 207X World Music in the Bachelor
of Music degree program:
N.A.S.M. Commission Report 4-27-12
3. It is not clear that all students in Bachelor of Music
in Performance programs are required to study and
experience musical language and achievements
beyond that of the primary culture encompassing the
area of specialization (see NASM Handbook 20102011, item VIII.B.4.). The Optional Response
indicates that a study of non-western cultures occurs
within the two semesters of Music History I and II
(see Optional Response, page 37); however, the
course syllabi shows the topics of "parallel traditions"
on two specific days in each of the two courses.
Considering the magnitude of the primary topics for
those particular days (Monophonic Secular Song;
Polyphony to 1300; Debussy and Ives; Stravinsky and
Bartok), it is unclear how students in the program will
realize any significant study or experience with music
beyond that of the primary culture. The response
should clarify how the institution meets this standard.
In formulating its response to document compliance
with this standard, the institution is asked to note that
"each music unit is responsible for choosing among
these materials and approaches when establishing
basic requirements consistent with NASM standards
and the expectations of the institution" (see NASM
Handbook 2010-2011, item III.L.2.).
RESPONSE;
All students in the Bachelor of Music degree
program will be required to take a 3 credit
course in World Music (MUSI 207X). A
syllabus is attached to this response. This
course is an introduction to the diversity of
music among the world’s peoples. Selected
music systems throughout the world examined
in their broad cultural contexts: religious,
historical, and social. Introduction to
ethnomusicology-a combination of
musicology, anthropology, and other related
disciplines. MUSI 207X also meets a 3 credit
general education requirement in Indigenous
and Global Perspectives. The Bachelor of
Music degree program will not experience
added requirements or added credits with this
curriculum change.
