Program Modification Form I Summary of Proposed Changes College of Forestry and Conservation/B.S. Wildland Restoration Department/program Summary We are requesting four types of changes to the BS in Wildland Restoration: Allow students to select among NRSM121S Nature of Montana, NRSM180 Careers in Natural Resources (current options) and NRSM170 International Environmental Change. Change the lower division writing requirement from WRIT 222 to NRSM 200. Remove the physics requirement to allow room in for a requirement for BIOE 374 General Ecology. Add and delete courses on the elective lists. Please note proposed additions to catalog in yellow highlight and deletions in red with a strike through. Allow students to select among NRSM121S Nature of Montana, NRSM180 Careers in Natural Resources (current options) and NRSM170 International Environmental Change. Currently all students must take either NRSM121S or NRSM180. We are proposing that students have the option to also takeNRSM170, allowing greater flexibility in the first year of a student’s academic program. All three courses provide an overview of the types of issues faced by natural resource managers, in order to help students pinpoint their specific area of interest. NRSM180 does this by emphasizing careers, while NRSM121S emphasizes the issues in Montana and NRSM170 highlights international issues. Change the lower division writing requirement from WRIT 222 to NRSM 200. WRIT 222 is no longer being offered. The College of Forestry is proposing a new writing course in its place (see new course proposal for NRSM 200). Delete the requirement for Physics. The physics options currently within the curriculum do not achieve the desired learning outcomes. Removing the requirement for physics will allow the additional requirement for ecology (see below). Students in the aquatic option will be advised that physics must be taken to meet the civil service hydrology requirements. Add a requirement for BIOE 374 General Ecology. The current curriculum allows to students to select among courses in the ecology of different systems (e.g., freshwater ecology, forest ecology) and general ecology. However, students of ecological restoration need a solid foundation in ecology, which is provided only in the General Ecology course. We have verified with the Division of Biological Sciences that this requirement will not affect their programs. Although this is adding 3 credits to the curriculum, the change in the physics requirement outlined above will reduce the credit load by 2 for a net increase of 1 additional credit. Add and delete courses on the elective lists. Several new courses have been developed since we created the rest/terr, rest/aquatic and rest/social science elective lists. In addition, several long-standing courses were overlooked. One course (GEO260 River Systems) listed as an elective in the aquatic option is no longer offered. We have updated our elective lists accordingly. Remove NRSM 449E from the elective list. NRSM 489E is required in the major. The instructor (Dr. Dane Scott) of NRSM489E also teaches NRSM449E. Dane has indicated that students should not take both courses. Change FORS 250 (2 credits) to FORS 284 (3 credits). This is an elective within our program. FORS 250 is being replaced with the new course FORS 284 (see new course form). What other programs are affected by your proposal? Obtain We have verified with the Division of signatures as requested above. Biological Sciences that the ecology requirement will not affect their programs. V Copies and Electronic Submission Once approved, the original, a paper copy and an electronic file are submitted to the Faculty Senate Office, UH 221 (camie.foos@mso.umt.edu). VI Department Summary Required if several proposals are submitted. In a separate document list program title and proposed change of all proposals.
