Studio work resulting in exercises and scene work to accompany each discipline explored. Justification: How does the course fit with the existing curriculum? Why is it needed? This course replaces the need for graduate students to repeat THTR 517: Problems in Movement/Dance during their time in the MFA program. By creating this course, students can experience different and specific indepth training each of their six semesters in the program rather than repeating a course during the first year. Course Description We will survey a variety of disciplines under the heading ‘movement for actors.’ We will investigate the practice, theory, and intersection of these disciplines, and explore the potential range for application in our work as actors, directors, and teachers. This includes yoga pants, sweatpants, shorts, etc. For tops, a comfortable shirt is a good idea. If it’s cold, I suggest wearing two layers, because it may get warm. Shoes and socks are not permitted in class work due to their danger to yourself and other students. If you do not wish to be barefoot, you may wear jazz or kung fu shoes that have a soft, flexible sole. Hygiene We will be sweating together. Out of respect for the group, please bathe in the mornings before class, and refrain from wearing any strong perfumes/colognes. Grading Attendance/Participation: Writing/Research: Primary Performances: Final: 35% 25% 20% 20% Participation and Attendance -Full participation is expected, and mandatory to complete the course! You do not have to be right to participate!! -Punctual attendance is required. No absences are permitted. If you’re late, you’re absent. -Each absence will result in the decline of your grade. Emergency absences will be evaluated on a case-bycase basis. If you are absent in excess of FIVE times you will not pass the course. -Attendance at all departmental productions is also required. *If you want tips on how to stay healthy, feel free to ask.
