Computers and specialized mathematical software are increasingly important for all mathematicians and statisticians. Math majors will greatly benefit from an introduction to mathematical software, including elementary programming techniques. Exposure to the mathematical typesetting system LaTeX will help students communicate mathematics in their subsequent courses and their future careers. For these reasons, the math department decided to introduce the new requirement that most math majors take M 210, even those who are taking a foreign language and who currently do not need to take any computer science or programming classes. We are exempting students in the Mathematics Education option from this requirement, since they are required to take “M 301 Mathematics Technology for Teachers”, which exposes them to some of the content of M 210. We are also exempting majors in the combined Computer Science/Mathematical Sciences degree program, since they acquire, even without M 210, a deep understanding of computer science and programming over the course of their studies. For those math majors who elect to take two computer science classes instead of a foreign language, we will count M 210 towards the two-course requirement. So instead of taking two courses chosen from CSCI 100, 135, 136 (CS 101, 131, 132), they will have to take only one.
