6. Justification for proposed change
We are proposing a new course title to more
accurately reflect the nature of the course and to
allow for additional courses to be renamed. We
are lowering the number of credits to reflect the
work level and number of contact hours in the
course. The course’s syllabus does not change
from semester to semester, so students should
not be allowed to repeat the course.

Description:
The course will focus on rehearsal techniques for the director. We will discuss the development of
a personal method of direction and the rehearsal process. The key to success for any director is
communication with artists.
We examine a variety of rehearsal tools to be utilized in approaching specific directing challenges.
We will discuss and examine how the individual director’s aesthetic shapes his/her establishment of
a personal directing technique.
Attention will be paid to style, period, genre, venue, and other variables relating to directing and
rehearsal.
While the intent of the course is to be practical, focusing on rehearsal itself, we will utilize research
to study the work of noteworthy directors to discuss their methodology in the body of their work
within the field.
Objectives:
Address and develop how the director’s personal aesthetic is reflected within the rehearsal process
Enhance and continue to develop the director’s communication skills with the actors through
rehearsals, games, and scene work
Increase the director’s range of choices to achieve his/her objectives when working with actors
