THTR 476 Directing III Jere Hodgin Jere.hodgin@umontana.edu McGill 216: 406-243-2877 The University of Montana Description: The course will focus on rehearsal techniques for the director. We will discuss the development of a personal method of direction and the rehearsal process. The key to success for any director is communication with artists. We examine a variety of rehearsal tools to be utilized in approaching specific directing challenges. We will discuss and examine how the individual director’s aesthetic shapes his/her establishment of a personal directing technique. Attention will be paid to style, period, genre, venue, and other variables relating to directing and rehearsal. While the intent of the course is to be practical, focusing on rehearsal itself, we will utilize research to study the work of noteworthy directors to discuss their methodology in the body of their work within the field. Objectives: Address and develop how the director’s personal aesthetic is reflected within the rehearsal process Enhance and continue to develop the director’s communication skills with the actors through rehearsals, games, and scene work Increase the director’s range of choices to achieve his/her objectives when working with actors Texts A Sense of Direction: Some Observations on the Art of Directing by William Ball Tips: Ideas for the Director by Jon Jory Graded Course Requirements: Presentation of Two Directed Scenes (30%) Written Research Paper and Presentation on Directors (10%) Log of Outside Rehearsal Observations (10%) Production Response Papers (20%) Participation (20%) Written Self-Evaluation (5%) Written Scene Analyses (5%) Note: As this class is based on participation, attendance is requisite. You are permitted a maximum of three (3) absences. Any additional absences will result in a reduction in grade for each day missed. The collaborative and creative processes of theatre are the foundation of our class. Mutual feedback and a free exchange of ideas are necessary.
