Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. ⇓
The current Foreign Language/Symbolic Systems Requirement will be subsumed by the
requirements in Group III of the new general education requirements (which will be in the 20092010 Catalog). Math majors will most likely satisfy the new Symbolic Systems requirement
simply by virtue of taking a required calculus course. The department thinks that students who
do not want to learn a foreign language should instead learn the basics of programming and/or
computer science, which will be very useful for their future careers. As in the past, we exempt
those of our majors whose program of studies requires them to complete a particularly large
number of requirements (math-ed majors and double-majors).
Please note that this change is preserving the status quo – one might even call this an editorial
change.
