INFORMATIONAL
SESSIONS
Follow your individual schedule, designed to guide you from
one Informational Session to the next. These sessions help
prepare you for a successful transition to college.
ChallengeWorks Course
The Ultimate in Team Building Experience
PVAMU Campus
Students participate in low-intensity teambuilding exercises in
an unfamiliar environment. Trained facilitators link the groups’
experience to real world situations that students may encounter
during the school semester. A Panther Talk follows each Challenge
Works event.
Class is Now in Session
PVAMU Academic and Behavioral
Expectations of You
The myths surrounding what is and is not expected of college
students are overwhelming. “In college, you don’t have to attend
every class.” “I heard that a professor can kick you out of class!”
“Someone told me we have to BUY our own Scantrons!” How do
you sort through it all?! This interactive session discusses the
University’s academic and behavioral expectations of its students.
Select faculty members challenge the students’ understanding of
a course syllabus, explain class attendance and provide other
helpful information that fosters student academic success. A
Panther Talk will follow this session.

CAMP
TEXAS NEW FISCAL LITERACY TEST
and CAREER CRUSIN’
Fiscal Responsibilities
During this session, students receive extensive information
regarding the consequences of abusing financial aid, withdrawing
from classes, applying for credit cards, contracting with cell phone
companies and handling overpayments. Your understanding of
fee receipts and overpayments are addressed along with the
notion of full financial aid. You will get the facts and understood
how to take care of your personal finances. Career Cruisin’ is a
career exploration tool that can enhance a students’ knowledge
about real-world career information and assist them with choosing
a major about themselves with the learning styles inventory and
personal interest survey assessments.
Health/Safety Issues
Taking Care of Yourself: Health and Fitness at PVAMU
Staying healthy means more than just avoiding the “freshman
20.” Students will learn ways to relieve stress by making healthy
decisions. You also learn what lifestyle choices can harm your
health and adversely affect your future career and take a health
survey during literacy test.
Utilizing the Library for Success
The John B. Coleman Library is a terrific educational facility. In
this session, students learn what services are available and how
to utilize them.
The Real Buzz: Personal Choices
Study Skills
Students are told that there is some truth to the stereotypes and
the scary news stories that discuss the latest research. Students’
understanding of the issues as they relate to making healthy
decisions about drugs and alcohol is challenged during this
session. They are asked the question, “Are you making the right
choice...?” in regard to social behavior, selection of friends, sexual
violence, drugs, alcohol and campus safety. The Counseling
Center, the Department of Public Safety and the Office of Student
Conduct will participate in and facilitate these sessions. You will
each receive a copy of the Student Handbook at the Fall Student
Convocation. A Panther Talk will follow this session. How can your
PA help you make the right choices in and out of the classroom?
Can’t Cram for this Exam and The Importance of the
Undergraduate Catalog and Course Catalog
2
3
During this session, faculty members facilitate a discussion on
the importance of good study skills, having a positive attitude
toward learning and the importance of retaining and referring to

“Dear Prairie View”
Dear Prairie View, our song to thee we raise
In gratitude we sing our hymn of praise,
For mem’ries dear, for friends and recollections
For lessons learned while here we’ve lived with thee
For these we pledge our hearts full of devotion,
To serve thee now, and through eternity.
As days go by, our hearts will not grow cold,
We’ll love thy purple royal and thy gold,
We’ll through our lives exemplify thy teachings,
We’ll always strive a blessing to be,
Thy children we, our love and pride confessing,
We’ll love thee now, and through eternity.
