CSAC NEWS
October 2013
Editors: Shelley Auer/Danielle Beschta
It is a great time to be a classified staff member at UWSP. We are the group of employees who will help shape the
future of classified staff at UWSP!
While full implementation of the UPS system has been delayed until July 1, 2015, the Board of Regents authorized
full governance rights to classified staff at the September 6, 2013 meeting. What does this mean, you might ask.
It means we have the opportunity to get involved on campus and make an impact! More so than any time in the
past.
As we continue to evolve from an advisory council to a fully-participating governance body, perhaps it’s time to
start the change with a new name. One suggestion is to change from Classified Staff Advisory Council to Classified
Staff Council (until UPS is implemented in 2015). It’s a small change, but significant in getting campus to
understand we are equal partners in campus-wide policies. What do you think? Please send your comments to
classified.staff.advisory.council@uwsp.edu. (yes, we will need to change our mailbox name too!)
With governance comes responsibility. Decisions cannot be made unless staff are willing to serve on committees
and get involved. As co-chairs, we are working with Faculty Senate, Personnel and other campus groups to
incorporate classified staff into the governance process. We’re not there yet, but get closer with each meeting we
attend!
Throughout the coming months, we will be communicating with you through a variety of ways (website, e-mail
and in print) on the progress we are making. We will include information on opportunities for professional
development, campus committee work and updating you on the progress of not only governance, but also
continued work on the UPS system and how it will change our work lives. There will be many opportunities for
you to get involved and I hope you say YES when asked to do so.
Please check-out the website at http://www.uwsp.edu/csac/Pages/default.aspx for the complete governance
executive summary, copies of meeting minutes and especially the ‘resources’ link. It includes information on the
Discretionary Merit Compensation (DMC) process, the UPS system, classified grant applications, and much more.
The newly redesigned Human Resources page at http://www.uwsp.edu/hr/Pages/default.aspx includes links to
the ‘My UW System’, vacancy notices, benefits and much more.
On behalf of the committee, thank you for allowing us to represent YOU on our council. It is going to be a busy,
but exciting year!

Annual Benefit Enrollment (ABE) Period
October 7
7—
—November 1, 2013
Your needs. Your benefits.
The Time Is Now. Enroll, Make Changes…It’s the Annual Benefit Enrollment (ABE)
Period for 2014!
The Annual Benefit Enrollment (ABE) period is October 7, 2013 - November 1, 2013. This is your annual opportunity
to enroll in and make changes to your benefits. This is the only time during the year when you are able to make
changes to your benefits unless you have an eligible family (e.g. marriage, birth, divorce...) or employment change.
All changes made during this period take effect on January 1, 2014.
How do I know if I need to do anything during the Annual Benefit Enrollment
(ABE) Period?
If you do nothing, almost all of the benefits you have now will continue in 2014. However, you must re-enroll in
Employee Reimbursement Account (ERA) program every year. Health plans may make changes to their provider
networks so you should confirm your doctors are still available under your health plan in 2014.
If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below, you may
want to consider taking action during the ABE period.

Uniform Dental Benefits (under SGH)
Uniform Dental Benefits Under State Group Health Insurance Plans
To ensure that all members receive the same level of dental coverage through their health insurance, health plans
(except the Standard Plan and SMP) will offer the same dental level of coverage in 2014. This is called Uniform
Dental Benefits. Your health plan still decides if you need to see certain dentists (in-network) to receive benefits.
The Uniform Dental Benefit is included in your health insurance coverage at no additional cost to you. It is intended
to provide coverage for diagnostic, preventive, and basic restorative services (such as fillings). It does not include
coverage for major dental services, such as crowns, root canals or implants.
To find out the impact on the dental coverage currently offered by your health plan, see the Uniform Dental
Certificate of Coverage on page 123 of the It’s Your Choice 2014 Reference Guide. For more information on Uniform
Dental Benefits, see Frequently Asked Questions 2 through 7 beginning on Page 9 of the It’s Your Choice 2014
