The next change will be from “Classified” to “University” Staff as we gear up for July 1, 2015 and the full implementation of the UPS system. First and foremost for this semester, the Council is working with Human Resources on the campus policies in conjunction with the UPS System policies. Thank you to all the volunteers who agreed to serve on these workgroups. More volunteer opportunities will be available throughout the year and we hope you will answer the call! Your Council will let you know when and where there is an opening for a classified staff member to serve. Remember, you have a say in what happens to classified staff on campus. We do make an impact. Check out the website http://www.uwsp.edu/csc/Pages/default.aspx for updates. We will continue to post all meeting minutes, agendas and let you know what’s happening with the CSC. As stated at the University Address, this will no doubt be a busy and challenging year, but with that challenge comes the knowledge that we have an opportunity to impact future UWSP employees. This changes the challenge to a privilege to be involved. His father was a design engineer with Honeywell and his mother went to law school and served as an appeals court judge in Minnesota. While she retired 15 years ago, she continues to work several months a year as a retired judge. As a native of California, Nancy jokingly reminded Todd recently that if the winter of 2004-2005 had been like the one of 2013-2014, she might not have stayed. Welcome – Todd Huspeni, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Programs. Todd and Nancy have three children: Lauren (14), Thomas (11), and Christopher (9), and the family enjoys fishing, camping, and soccer. Please join us in welcoming Todd to Academic Affairs! Todd Huspeni is the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Programs and Professor of Biology. Prior to working at UW-Stevens Point, Todd completed his graduate and postdoctoral training in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). During his graduate training he taught several courses as a teaching assistant (parasitology, invertebrate zoology, and general biology). After receiving his PhD, he spent four years teaching these same subjects as a lecturer at UCSB. He also mentored several undergraduates in research projects, but ultimately desired to pursue his career at a teaching institution like UW-Stevens Point. Since being hired here, he has taught parasitology, general zoology, and field ecology courses. Welcome – Troy Seppelt, Dean of Students Troy Seppelt is the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point’s new Dean of Students. Troy comes to UWStevens Point from Colorado Mesa University where he served as the Director of Residence Life. Prior to that, Troy also worked as the Assistant/Associate Director for Residential Life at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, and as Hall Director for Residence Life at Macalester College in Minnesota. Troy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Morris, and a Doctor of Education (ABD) in Higher Education Leadership from Azusa Pacific University. Says Troy, “I work to support student learning both in and outside of the classroom. Much of my work revolves around creating a network of resources and support, so in the event a student comes up against a challenge, UW-Stevens Point has mechanisms in place to connect the student to help. Whatever the questions or concerns, the Dean of Students office is here to help students succeed.” In addition to his MA and PhD from UCSB, Todd also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Biology from the University of Minnesota. Says Todd, “My job is about the easiest job to explain while also being amongst the most complicated to achieve. Simply put, my job is to promote excellence in teaching and learning on this campus.” This includes providing the resources and support to develop excellent teachers while also providing other support and resources for students to do the hard work of learning. “This part of the job description is the easy part. How we best achieve excellence in teaching and learning is the more complicated nature of this position, and the question is the focus of my attention every day.” Todd says he is inspired by the quality of our faculty and the learning of our students. “This is truly a special place for teaching and learning, and I am proud to be a part of the team that seeks to expand upon our history’s excellence.” Troy was born and raised in Minnesota. His time away from work is dedicated to his family. “I have a wonderful wife, Heidi, and three fantastic kids, Emily, Max, and Sophie.” They enjoy spending time together, exploring nature by hiking and camping, and time with their extended families who are now much closer [in proximity]. He also enjoys running and mountain biking. Please join us in welcoming Troy to UW-Stevens Point! 2 Chili/Soup cook-off in November In addition, T.E.A.M. members produce a monthly newsletter (displayed on bulletin boards by offices and break rooms) covering such topics as: DEPARTMENT NEWS Spotlight On… The Classified Staff Council applauds Facility Services for the creation of T.E.A.M., their morale building ideas, generous fundraising events, and in-house newsletters. Campus Reservations Office The new UW-Stevens Point Campus Calendar is up and running and the UW-Stevens Point Reservation Request System has been updated. T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) was organized in the fall of 2012 by classified employees, for employees, of Facility Services. Six employees formed a committee, came up with ideas, and met two times a month. Reservable spaces can be requested thru the online system, http://campusreservations.uwsp.edu . Once you have established a log-on (all UWSP staff and students are automatically approved), select the building you want to reserve space in, select the date and time and the available spaces will be shown. Once submitted, the request is automatically routed to the appropriate space manager for approval. Some rooms are managed through the Campus Reservations Office; others through the managing department. TEAM holds nominations and voting twice a year, and they rotate people out two at a time. Says Cheryl Mueller, current T.E.A.M. member, “I am proud to say we have total support from our management staff. When we need them, they provide us with state and agency policies to make sure events and activities go very smoothly.” Please note that some campus locations are not available through this online system; however, the contact information for these spaces are available. Dining and Summer Conferences Myth: Eating low-fat foods will make you healthy. Dining and Summer Conferences welcomes Cathy Sales, Food Service Assistant 2 at Upper DeBot. Holly Bleser joined Dining and Summer Conferences as the Summer Conference Coordinator in June. The DUC Food Court is now offering a restaurant service style during the hours of 3-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Come enjoy dinner served at your table! Dining and Summer Conferences won the Grand Champion Gold at the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) National Convention for Special Event – Theme Dinner in Residential Dining for Jolablot – A mid-winter Viking Feast. Fact: A low-fat diet and a healthy diet are not, surprisingly, one and the same. Low-fat foods are often deceptive, containing marginally reduced levels of fat in exchange for a high dose of sugar. If you are trying to become healthier through your diet, the rules are simple: Eat fresh, unprocessed foods. Get plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Remember to balance your diet. An all-protein diet might be the diet of choice for a weight lifter but not for the average person. Myth: Eating after 8 p.m. causes weight gain. Fact: It does not matter what time of day you eat. It is what and how much you eat and how much physical activity you do during the whole day that determines whether you gain, lose, or maintain your weight. No matter when you eat, your body will store extra calories as fat. Weight is all about energy balance; fewer calories taken in plus more calories expended. Congratulations on winning the gold!! Myth: I need extra protein to build my muscles. Employee Wellness Fact: Most people get more than enough protein in their regular diets. The key to bigger muscles is a good exercise program and a balanced overall diet. To give your muscles the energy they need for top performance, eat plenty of complex carbohydrate foods, such as pasta, bread, crackers, rice and potatoes and be sure to balance that with fruits and vegetables. Fact: Both the cold and flu are caused by bacteria or viruses, not by cold weather. The cold and flu are usually caused by people transferring bacteria or viruses by touching objects (such as door handles or pens) or other people. Some would argue that when you’re cold, your immune system is less effective at fighting these germs and, thus, you are more likely to catch a cold. But again, this is false. Tests have shown that you are just as likely to pick up a cold in the balmy heat of the tropics as 4 The Department of Theatre & Dance will periodically share information about productions that may be of interest to particular disciplines across campus. The first of these is our opening production of RADIUM GIRLS. Vicki. “I am proud to be part of the Camp HOPE organization benefitting grieving children.” Robyn Woytasik, General Ledger, was married September 20, 2014, to Ben (Woody) Bolton. RADIUM GIRLS tells the true story of the young women who were employed by the U.S Radium Corporation to paint watch dials with radium-infused luminous paint during World War I and into the 1920s. These women begin to fall ill with radiation poisoning and must battle the corporation for compensation as their lives begin to unravel. Fast-paced, engrossing and highly theatrical, RADIUM GIRLS provides wonderful discussion material for classes in women’s studies, history, pre-law, health care, occupational safety, business ethics and many other areas. We invite instructors to consider encouraging or requiring their students to attend a performance. For more information please contact golsen@uwsp.edu. Congratulations to everyone!! Professional Development UPDC Grants The Classified Staff Personnel Development Subcommittee strongly encourages Classified Staff to submit grant requests for training and development projects. The awards from the University Personnel Development Committee (UPDC) may be granted to individuals for career development and for some group projects. Development grants support classified staff development and training. Examples of projects that have been funded include: attending annual conferences directly related to your position on campus, sending a maintenance person to a seminar for training, sending clerical employees to a course on developing lead worker skills, and bringing a speaker to campus to conduct seminars. One copy of your proposal should be submitted to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), Room 208, Old Main, no later than noon on October 10, 2014 or February 27, 2015. RADIUM GIRLS runs October 17-19 & 23-25 in Jenkins Theatre in the Noel Fine Arts Center. Students may purchase tickets at the DUC Information and Ticket office in advance of a performance for a reduced price. Free tickets are available to students on the day of the show, subject to availability. Good News Network The Classified Staff Subcommittee of the University Personnel and Development Committee (UPDC) is seeking 3-4 individuals willing to serve a one-year term on the subcommittee. Meetings are scheduled on an as-needed basis for review of grant proposals when submitted by a Classified Staff employee. A few ad hoc meetings may be scheduled throughout the year as well in order to brainstorm and implement ways to promote personnel development opportunities to Classified Staff. Jenna Fritsch, Residential Living, completed her Master of Science (MS) degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education in August 2014. Kimber Goodwin, General Ledger, will graduate in December with a 4.0 GPA from Minnesota State University with a Master of Arts (MA) in Communication Studies degree. Their online courses are affordable, fun, fast, convenient, and geared just for you. While classified staff did vote in favor of the governance structure shared in the April 2014 open meeting for classified staff, we have since shared the structure with faculty, academic staff, the Faculty Affairs Committee, the Academic Staff Council, the University Affairs Committee, and Faculty Senate. This sparked a lot of conversation and a lot of questions. Instructor-Led Courses Professional development and personal enrichment Sessions start monthly Convenient six-week format Interactive learning environment Instructors lead each course Award of completion with passing score In an effort to answer the questions and allow others on campus to learn more about the merged governance plan, the ad hoc UPSC will host an open forum for campus discussion of shared governance structures on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, from 3-5 p.m. in Room 116 CPS. If you want to hear some of the questions being asked or learn a little bit about the work we’ve done in the last several months to move forward with the merged governance structure, please plan on attending the open forum if you are able. The forum is open to the entire campus community (students, academic staff, classified staff, and faculty). University Personnel System Update The University Personnel System will take effect July 1, 2015. While the overarching policies have been developed, classified staff have the opportunity to refine those policies for use at UW-Stevens Point specifically. October 29 – Merged Governance Open Forum Merged Governance Update: Representatives from CSC continue to work with the ad hoc University Personnel System Committee (UPS) to come up with a governance We put out a call for volunteers to serve on workgroups to help us create campus policy, and you responded. 6 governance rights by the Board of Regents on September 6, 2013; and the University Personnel System policies being implemented July 1, 2015). In addition, in order to be taken seriously as a governance group and to be kept in the loop on important campus initiatives, we had many guests attend our meetings. Work groups are in the process of meeting now. At the same time, even with two meetings per month, a lot of our meeting time was utilized by these essential updates. We apologize for not letting you know sooner that anything that was not time-sensitive or did not have a deadline attached would have to be put on the back burner for now. Please visit our website for more information and to stay up-to-date on our progress at www.uwsp.csc We do intend to bring back these events in the future. With all that is happening this year, however, we may not be able to do so in this academic year. This is important to us all, and we know you have missed them (as we have missed the opportunity to serve you by offering and hosting such events). Therefore, consider this a call for volunteers willing to create a working group to focus on these very important events. Classified Staff Appreciation Week, Brown Bag Lunches, Chili Feed, and More Please help us to better serve you and to bring back the traditional events that so many have come to know and love by volunteering to serve on the Activities and Awareness Working Group. We’ve had some people inquire as to why we have not had any brown bag lunches, chili feeds, Classified Staff Appreciation Week, and all the other fun, important, and traditional events our council used to provide. If interested in serving in this capacity, please contact either CSC Chair, Paulette Rogers progers@uwsp.edu) or co-chair, Kathy Stedl (kstedl@uwsp.edu). As the council was in the process of moving from an advisory committee to a governance group, we found ourselves overwhelmed with more work than we could handle in once monthly meetings. In an effort to get more done, we moved to meeting twice a month. We found that there was still more to do than we had the time and/or human power to accomplish. Thank you so much for your understanding and, hopefully, your service. We all agree that Classified Staff Appreciation Week, brown bag lunches, chili feeds, etc., are important and honored traditions on campus, but in light of all the changes that took place and continue to take place over the last couple of years, we had to concentrate our time and efforts on time-sensitive items (like the merged governance – we were granted 7 2014-15 Classified Staff Council Danielle Beschta Jay Christianson Renee Copes Randi Greene Pat Kleman Tammy Larson Harley Martin Julie Millis Cheryl Mueller Libby Raymond Paulette Rogers (co-chair) Kathy Stedl (co-chair) Campus Reservations Information Technology Point Card Office UCLCC COLS Dean’s Office Academic Custodial Residential Living General Ledger Accounting Facility Services Academic Affairs Academic Affairs Printing and Design www.uwsp.edu/csc 8 dbeschta@uwsp.edu jchristi@uwsp.edu rcopes@uwsp.edu rgreene@uwsp.edu pkleman@uwsp.edu tlarson@uwsp.edu hmartin@uwsp.edu jumillis@uwsp.edu cmueller@uwsp.edu lraymond@uwsp.edu progers@uwsp.edu kstedl@uwsp.edu
