Rebecca Ann Binkowski Scholarship for Social Work Students 2016-17

The Rebecca Ann Binkowski Scholarship was established in memory of Rebecca Ann Binkowski who graduated with honors from
Lourdes University in 1989. Proceeds for the scholarship are from the Binkowski Family. The amount of the scholarship amount will
vary based on the needs of the candidate(s) and on funds available.
About Rebecca Ann Binkowski
This scholarship was established in memory of Rebecca, a 1989 honors graduate of Lourdes University. While attending
Lourdes, Rebecca developed an interest in helping children and pursued that interest in her employment at Children Services Board.
She earned an award from CSB for her devotion to her work and unselfish service to the children of Lucas County. Rebecca left her
work at CSB for a position as a youth director at a local church until moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan to attend Western Michigan
University.
While pursuing her Masters Degree in Social Work, she took a position as an apartment manager for mentally ill clients who
were eligible for semi-independent living. She provided assistance with matters related to apartment upkeep and other household
issues. Rebecca often went beyond the terms of her job. On the morning of February 3, 1993, she provided a ride to one of her
clients. With no determined motive, the resident attacked Rebecca, she died within minutes.
In her memory, scholarships have been established at both Lourdes University and Western Michigan University.
Purpose of Scholarship:
This scholarship will financially assist junior or senior grade level, Social Work Bachelor degree seeking students.
Eligibility Criteria:
 Junior or Senior in Social Work Major
 Currently enrolled, full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing
 Minimum GPA of 3.0 in Social Work classes; minimum GPA of 2.5 overall
 Community involvement
 Must fully complete the 2016-17 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) process at Lourdes.
How to apply: (Incomplete/late applications will not be considered.)
Complete and return this application with the following two items:
- A typed essay (500 word maximum) on your future plans and what Social Work means to you.
Important! Essays will be judged on grammar, spelling, presentation, as well as, content
- A description and timeline of your community involvement.
Notification
Recipient(s) of the scholarship are notified through the Financial Aid Award Letter process which is based on the completion of the
2016-17 FAFSA process at Lourdes. Therefore, notification will vary depending on the date of the recipient’s completion of this
process.
Responsibility of Recipient(s) - before payment can be made:
Recipient will receive a Financial Aid Award Letter and a request to complete the “Thank You Letter” process. The “Thank You
Letter” is expected to look professional and should be addressed to “To Whom it May Concern.” Be sure to mention the name of the
scholarship within the body of the letter. The letter must be received at the Financial Aid Office before the award can be paid.
