Kahle A true servant leader, Eleanor M. Kahle, 1916 – 1995, was a well-known woman who demonstrated a tremendous amount of Christian dedication and service to the community. Mrs. Kahle has been honored on numerous occasions for contributions and her willing involvement, often on a volunteer basis, in business, in the Church, and in government. Her many honors included being the recipient of the 1984 Mother Adelaide award and having the Eleanor M Kahle Senior Center named in her honor. Some of the accomplishments that earned her such recognition included serving as the first Laywoman Pastoral Associate in the Toledo Diocese, as Founder and Executive Director of the 1,600-member West Toledo Senior Citizen Center, as President of the Toledo Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, as Advisor on Social Security Reform to Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Vice Mayor, City of Toledo to name a few. Eleanor also served as Vice President of the Toledo Sister Cities International Program and was very active in the Sister Cities International movement in the early 90's. She travelled to Szeged, Hungary to participate in the signing of agreement between Toledo and Szeged to establish a sister city relationship. Eleanor Kahle’s wide-ranging service to the community grew out of a deep commitment to family and church. When her husband died in 1967, there were still three minor children at home. She found it necessary to return to school to freshen up her employable skills so that she could support her family. But she never lost sight of the dream she and her husband shared—to have all six of their boys well educated so that they would be productive members of society in whatever field they chose. All six of those sons have graduated from college with honors are active in the professional or business world, and have obviously been inoculated with their parents’ spirit of generosity in human service. In honor of the legacy Mrs. Kahle left and in appreciation of Lourdes University, her academic and spiritual “home”, her sons established the Eleanor M. Kahle Memorial Endowed Scholarship in 1996. Today, the Kahle Scholarship benefits non-traditional students who have demonstrated the ability to succeed academically. Scholarships are awarded annually and thanks to the generosity of family and friends of Mrs. Kahle, will do so in perpetuity.
