SUFAC Meeting April 12th, 2010. Members Present: Nick Herro Jake Gietman Carly Cappozzo Karl Krogman Brock Bennett Derek Nelson Eric Schmidt David Wermedal Laura Lauderdale Dr. Nicklaus Members Excused: Dr. Bryan I. Approval of minutes from 3/29/20: -Approved II. Green Fund Hearing We are going to hear from JCES (leanna, larry and missy) a. Motion: to approve the logo to be put on all green funded projects (Cappozzo /Bennett) i. Discussion: Brock likes the logo! ii. Motion Passes b. Organic garden -JCES decided not to fund the organic garden. Since most of the work would have to be done over the summer, and there just aren’t people to run it then. Also there is really no location for this. c. LED lights –payback in two years. University centers agreed to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of this project. These bulbs cost less over time than traditional bulbs. There was only one vendor contacted for this project. They cost around 33-35 dollars for a bulb; however, they have a life of around 10 years. LED bulbs are fully recyclable because they contain no mercury. d. Composting –Hillview, a green house on 24th street, has agreed to allow us to house this there. Composting not only reduces what we add to landfills, it can be used to produce mulch. If approved, this project would be ready to go by September. e. REC lights –this will reduce the total kilowatts used. The request is for $80,350. This past the committee 11-0. These lights last a lot longer than normal bulbs, and the REC has agreed to maintain the upkeep on these bulbs. This is a state project, they have engineering costs and DOA costs. This project will save the university around $20,000 in just the first year of use! f. Shower heads –this request is to replace 373 shower heads that will greatly reduce the amount of water used. The water pressure is decrease slightly, but very few people even noticed in their pilot program. Residence life will pay for the upkeep on these. g. Wind Turbine –this request is for three wind turbines to be placed somewhere on campus. However, there are a lot of unknowns on this project so JCES decided not to fund this at this time, until more is known. h. Hand Dryers –this request is to install efficient hand dryers in the most heavily used bathrooms. They needed more details on this project, so they decided to push this project back. Motion: to approve the four approved requests for the Green Fund (Cappozzo /?) Motion tabled Discussion: We should be able to see where the money these groups are saving ends up going. Even though wind turbines are very visible ways to show where the green fund has been spent, it will not significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Whereas reducing the amount of water and electricity we use is a more significant factor in reducing our energy consumption. III. One-Time Funding Policy A few committee chairs feel that one-time funding may not be a good idea; however, the overall consensus of the groups is for this policy. The point of creating a policy for this process is to reduce the learning curve. Every year SUFAC decides what its policy should be, and the committees have to figure a new process out every year. How can student funds be used to fund academic requests? Shouldn’t the university fund items for their classes? a. Motion: to approve the document as a whole (Lauderdale /Gietman) Motion Passes b. This will be sent back to senate for approval this week. IV. Forms a. Year end report –simply asks groups to explain significant changes in a budget, and all expenses over $500. b. Ending balance assessment appeals form and the budget adjustment form are very basic and easy to use. c. Motion to approve all forms (Schmidt /Cappozzo) Motion Passes Homework… (oh no!) read through the Green Fund proposals May 3rd, end of the year party at Larry’s house! V. Adjournment at 7:06 pm.
