Note: Beginning Fall 2011, UM-Missoula incorporated the new reporting
methodology required for Federal IPEDS reporting that permits students to
report multiple ethnicities ("Two or more Races") by checking as many
individual ethnicities as they deem appropriate. Under the Federal reporting
method, if a student selects "Hispanic" as one of two or more races, the
students is counted as Hispanic, rather than in the Two or More Races
category. While UM-Missoula will use this method as required for its annual
IPEDS report, we have found that it tends to significantly understate our Native
American student population. To more accurately report our Native American
population for internal purposes, the Office of the Commissioner of Higher
Education (OCHE) has created an alternative method wherein multiracial
students reporting "Native American/Alaska Native" as one of two or more
races are counted as Native American. This summary uses the alternative
OCHE method. Due to this reporting change, ethnicity data published in
previous editions of the Data Digest will not be comparable.
