Graduate Research Assistantship – White-tailed Deer Ecology and Management One M.S. or Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship is available January 2, 2015 at the University of Missouri to study space use and demographics of white-tailed deer in Missouri. This project is part of a larger initiative to address several uncertainties and critical issues involving white-tailed deer management in Missouri. The project is unique because of the longer-term nature of field work (5 years), substantial sample sizes (240 deer with GPS collars each year), and relevance to harvest management in Missouri. Specific objectives include estimating annual sex and age-specific survival and recruitment rates and evaluating movements in relation to landscape features in two contrasting regions of Missouri. This project is an excellent opportunity for students with a strong interest in (1) conducting research that will directly affect management; (2) working collaboratively with state and university agencies; (3) opportunities for professional development; and (4) applying cutting-edge field and analytical methods. Candidates must have a B.S. or M.S. in wildlife science, biology, or a closely related discipline. Applicants must have relevant field research experience (telemetry experience a plus), a GPA > 3.2, and combined verbal and quantitative GRE scores > 1200. Strong work ethic, ability to work and effectively communicate with the public and a diversity of natural resource professionals, and interests in large mammal ecology, harvest management, and quantitative methods are essential. Stipend includes an annual salary, a tuition waiver, health insurance, and research funds. To apply, applicants should create a single pdf document containing a cover letter that includes a description of work experience and career goals, resume, copies of transcripts and GRE scores (unofficial at this time are acceptable), and the names and contact information (phone and e-mail address) of 3 references. Send application to Joshua Millspaugh (MillspaughJ@missouri.edu). Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the position is filled. Feel free to contact Joshua Millspaugh if you have questions about this opportunity. Last date to apply: 30 September 2014
