Schlitz Audubon Nature Center Position Description Position Title: Location: Summer Camp Internship Schlitz Audubon Nature Center Department: Immediate Supervisor: Education Shelly Rollins Position Summary: Summer Camp interns help provide educational and recreational programs for children ages two and one half through fifteen. Camp interns always work alongside other teachers and volunteers, never in isolation. Interns are responsible to the Director of Summer Camp. The 2015 summer program runs from June 8 through August 14. There are no camps during the week of July 4th. All programs take place at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Training is provided during the week prior to camp (June 1) and through shadowing experienced Audubon Teachers during the initial weeks. The work week is 40 hours a week. The internship will run for 12 weeks. Applicants must commit to working all 480 hours of the internship. General Description: Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is offering up to three Elementary Summer Camp Internships. This internship program is designed to provide three undergraduate or graduate college students with an opportunity to gain practical experience teaching students from preschool through middle school, while learning from experts in the field of environmental education. Schlitz Audubon has 185 acres of prime habitat along the western shore of Lake Michigan, a dedicated migratory flyway. Interns will learn from professional Teacher/Naturalists to develop outdoor teaching skills and to incorporate their knowledge of the natural history and conservation-related issues of Wisconsin into lesson plans and activities for young students. Schlitz Audubon’s Summer Camp internship is a challenging and highly rewarding experience for someone considering a career in environmental education. Essential Functions: Assist Audubon teaching staff in all aspects of summer camp Help plan summer camp curriculum when appropriate Other camp assignments in various capacities including: engaging in the creation of camp signage and promotion; materials and equipment preparation and maintenance; support in classrooms and lunch periods; serve as a “Greeter” table attendant during the first day of each camp week Report to the Director of Summer Camp Active participation in all camp related meetings Experiences involving camp leadership & supervisor opportunities can be included at the discretion of the summer camp director, in consultation with the academic advisor Expect to be both inside and outside each day, in all types of weather conditions May spend time working in other departments at the nature center to learn all aspects of nature center life May work with Citizen Science program Additional Functions: Maintain proficiency in current philosophies of environmental education Keep all program areas neat, clean and safe Occasional care and usage of live animals Relationships: Internal: The Summer Camp Intern cooperates with Audubon Teachers and volunteers to effectively implement the summer camp program. They actively report to the Director of Summer Camp and by extension, to the Director of Education. External: Summer Camp Interns are expected to maintain professional and communicative relations with parents and guardians of all children involved with summer camp. This may include addressing issues as outlined in the Summer Camp Policies & Procedures Manual (as administered by the Director of Summer Camp). Equipment: The Summer Camp Interns must be skilled in computer usage, typical word processing and database interpretation. They must have the ability to check and answer both email and phone messages on a regular basis. They must be skilled in a variety of scientific equipment such as microscopes, identification guides and sampling nets. Qualifications: Current student in the UWSP College of Natural Resources with a major or minor in HDNRM Environmental Education/Interpretation, Youth Programming & Camp Management or Forest Recreation. Students must be taking UWSP classes in Fall 2015. Applicant must qualify for at least $5,520 of financial need as determined by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Financial Aid Office.* Interested in environmental education and conservation Love working and being outdoors Interested in pursuing a career in environmental education or interpretation. Pay and Benefits: $11.50 per hour for 480 hours over 12 weeks Opportunity to develop job skills in environmental education and nonprofit fields Pre-requisites: Must have a current CPR/AED certification from an accredited institution such as the American Heart Association, American Red Cross etc. at the time of hire. Physical Requirements: The Summer Camp intern is expected to do moderate physical activity such as hiking, playing outdoor games and limited lifting (under 40 pounds).
