Position requirements:
 Ninety (90) days on-the-line wildland fire fighting experience gained through
containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire
 The incumbent of this position will be required to pass the Work Capacity
Test in the arduous category-carry 45 pound pack for 3 miles in 45 minutes
or less on level ground.
 Posess valid state drivers license
This is a secondary firefighter position covered under 5 USC 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5
USC 8412 (e) (FERS).
Government housing may be available.

District Fire Organization:
The Red River District averages 55 fires annually. The District has an active fuels and
fire use program. The Fire Management organization has 17 permenant employees: a
District FMO, AFMO-Operations, AFMO-Fuels, Prevention Tech., and 3 Station
Managers (Elk City,Red River and Dixie), 5 I.A. Module Leaders, 5 Senior Fire
Fighters,. The fire management organization also has one staffed fire detection lookout,
and 15 temporary firefighters. Fire suppression on the Red River District incorporates the
entire range of available forest resources , including smokejumpers, helitack, airtankers,
smokechaser crews and engine crews. The district currently operates two type six
engines. The majority of the initial attack fire suppression duties fall into type 5 fire
category.
Major duties of the job include:
 Oversees active fuels program on District
 Oversee wilderness fires on District
 Proficiency in WFDSS (Wildland Fire Decision Support System)
 COR on various fuels related contracts.
 Duty Officer when needed
 NEPA coordination
 ID Team participation and/or lead on various projects
 Coordinate with Timber Sale Administrators on Timber Sales on District
 Complete Burn plans
General Information
Elk City is a small, friendly community located approximately 52 miles southeast of
Grangeville, Idaho. Elk City has basic services such as a full service grocery store, gas
station, lodging, cafes, and churches. The Elk City School includes grades K-8. High
school students usually board out during the week in Grangeville or Kooskia.
The Elk City area is a great place to live for people who value high scenic quality and
outdoor recreation opportunities. Elk City is adjacent to the largest wilderness area in the
lower 48 states, with numerous opportunities for backcountry recreation year around.
The elevation of Elk City is approximately 4040 feet.
Grangeville is the closest full-service community. Travel time from Grangeville to Elk
City is approximately one and a half hours. It has a population of approximately 3500
people and is the county seat of Idaho County. Health services include a hospital, general
practitioners, dentists, optometrists and chiropractors.
The Red River Ranger Station, now classified as a guard station is located 15 miles east
of Elk City.
Dixie Town is an old, but somewhat modernized, mining town located just 33 miles from
Elk City. The historic Dixie Ranger Station, now classified as a guard station, is located
four miles south of Dixie on the road to Mackay Bar.
Things to Do, Places to See
Winter Recreation: The Snowmobile Club currently grooms approximately 250 miles
of trails and roads around the Elk City, Red River and Dixie area. Cross-country skiing
and snowshoeing are also popular sports during the winter months. Snow pack is
commonly available from November through April. The nearest downhill ski facilities
are Snowhaven in Grangeville and Cottonwood Butte in Cottonwood. The gym at the
Elk City School is also open for volleyball and basketball, one day per sport per week,
during the winter months.
Summer Recreation: The warm summers are ideal for many outdoor activities,
including camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, huckleberry picking, and horseback
riding. Innumerable trails provide unlimited opportunities for these activities. In
addition, a tennis court is available at the school. The nearest golf course (9-hole) is in
Grangeville. For a good view of the area, Elk Summit Lookout is accessible by road, and
Anderson Butte Lookout can be reached by trail. Swimming the area's many creeks and
rivers seems to be a favorite of many. The Salmon River country is accessed through the
National Forest at Whitewater Ranch or Mackay Bar.
Historical Sites/Routes: The remains of numerous old mines can be found throughout
the area and specifically on the "Gold Rush Loop" (a series of roads from Elk City to Red
River, to Dixie, to Orogrande and back to Elk City). The Elk City Wagon Road remains
intact from down river at Harpster to Elk City, passing some 29 points of interest. A
historical ranger station, cook house and ranger's house, built in the 1930's, can be seen at
the junction of the Red River Road (#234) and the Dixie Road (#222).
Hunting: Hunting is a popular sport at various times during the year. The most popular
species hunted are elk, whitetail deer, mule deer and grouse. Depending on the species
and/or weapon, you can hunt from mid-August into December. Bear and cougar are also
hunted, as are moose and bighorn sheep by special permit only.
Fishing: Fishing is also very popular in the spring, summer, and fall times. The South
Fork of the Clearwater has a run of Steelhead in the spring and again in the late fall to
winter months. During the summer the King Salmon also arrive in the South Fork of the
Clearwater in high numbers. There are also many streams and mountain lakes where you
can catch Rainbows, Bull Trout, and Brook Trout, with an occasional Cut Throat
Rainbow. In addition, there is a Trout Pond at the Red River Work Station.
