OUTREACH NOTICE 2014 Summer Temporary Positions Forestry Aid/Technician GS-0462-3/4/5 or Biological Science Aid/Technician GS-0404-3/4/5 Pacific Northwest Research Station - Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center Prineville, OR This is a pre-announcement outreach notice. We are looking for 1-2 summer temporary positions to measure forest and fuel characteristics in burned and treated areas of Oregon and California. The work schedule is typically four 10 hr days with 3 days off and/or eight 10 hr days with 6 days off. GS level is based on experience. Duration mid-June through mid-September or later if funding is available. These positions are 80% + field work. Workers will be exposed to hot dry or unpredictable weather, rough terrain, insects, high elevations, and other environmental conditions; must be capable of sustained physical work under these conditions. Camping conditions are often very primitive and will not be in campgrounds. Field work. There are two existing projects for field data collection. The first project consists of re-reading established vegetation and fuels plots in the 2012 Pole Creek Fire, on the Deschutes National Forest, near Sisters, OR. Plot data collection includes tree measurements, vegetation measurements and identification, and fuel quantification. Other data gathered might include tree stress indicators including but not limited to insect and pathogen presence. There is potential for accommodations to be supplied in the barracks at the Sisters Ranger District during this project. The second project is a long-term assessment of fuel treatment effectiveness across multiple national forests in CA. Plot data collection includes tree measurements, vegetation measurements and identification, and fuel quantification. No accommodations will be supplied; the crew will be camping in primitive conditions near each site. Data entry and Q&A. All of the data collected in the field will be entered into the FFI program, and then checked for quality. The photographs taken will need to be downloaded and labeled. Data entry and download may occur on a daily basis or sporadically as the field work allows. We are looking for individuals who… have coursework or experience in forestry, natural resources management, forest ecology, or related field is desired but not required. Experience with fire-related data collection is strongly preferred. have the ability to learn basic vegetation identification, measurement techniques, including use of tree measurement tools. have the ability to use or learn to use handheld data recorders, radios, and other field equipment. safely operate and care for vehicles. Has a driver’s license and clean DMV record. have familiarity with navigation by map and compass and GPS. have the ability to hike multiple miles with field gear and work 10+ hour days in the field. have camping experience and is able to be self-sufficient for 8+ day camping trips. have experience with spreadsheet applications for data entry and Q&A.
