We are looking for 1-2 summer temporary positions to measure forest and fuel characteristics
in burned and treated areas of Oregon and California. The work schedule is typically four 10 hr
days with 3 days off and/or eight 10 hr days with 6 days off. GS level is based on experience.
Duration mid-June through mid-September or later if funding is available.
These positions are 80% + field work. Workers will be exposed to hot dry or unpredictable
weather, rough terrain, insects, high elevations, and other environmental conditions; must be
capable of sustained physical work under these conditions. Camping conditions are often very
primitive and will not be in campgrounds.
Field work. There are two existing projects for field data collection. The first project consists of
re-reading established vegetation and fuels plots in the 2012 Pole Creek Fire, on the Deschutes
National Forest, near Sisters, OR. Plot data collection includes tree measurements, vegetation
measurements and identification, and fuel quantification. Other data gathered might include
tree stress indicators including but not limited to insect and pathogen presence. There is
potential for accommodations to be supplied in the barracks at the Sisters Ranger District
during this project.
The second project is a long-term assessment of fuel treatment effectiveness across multiple
national forests in CA. Plot data collection includes tree measurements, vegetation
measurements and identification, and fuel quantification. No accommodations will be supplied;
the crew will be camping in primitive conditions near each site.
Data entry and Q&A. All of the data collected in the field will be entered into the FFI program,
and then checked for quality. The photographs taken will need to be downloaded and labeled.
Data entry and download may occur on a daily basis or sporadically as the field work allows.
