Seasonal Karner Blue Butterfly Management Fort McCoy, Wisconsin ORGANIZATION The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies state-of-the-art science to foster sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. POSITION Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands are hiring up to four seasonal field crew employees to conduct Karner Blue Butterfly Management field work at Fort McCoy Military Installation, Wisconsin from approximately May 19th through July 31st, 2014. JOB DUTIES Employees will be part of a 6 person field crew that will perform the following tasks: • Main duties - Surveying and mapping of wild lupine (the host plant for the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly larvae) on Fort McCoy Military Lands. • Karner Blue Butterfly habitat management to include use of chainsaw and brush cutter. • Karner Blue Butterfly vegetation monitoring • Individuals hired are expected to work in a variety of weather conditions and may be subject to high temperatures, rain and wind. QUALIFICATIONS Valid driver’s license; a knowledge of Wisconsin’s flora and an ability to use dichotomous keys; aerial photo interpretation skills and the ability to navigate using a compass, aerial photo and topographical map; Ability to work well within a crew setting; Willingness to be able to capture/handle wildlife species including turtles and non-venomous snakes; use of chainsaw and brush cutters; Possess knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access) Lepidoptera species knowledge and identification also desired. WORK HOURS Applicants should expect to work up to 40 hrs/weeks Monday-Friday. The possibly exists for shortened work weeks due to inclement weather. Work may be made up on weekends if shortened Monday – Friday. WAGE $11.00 – $11.50 per hour depending on qualification. HOUSING Housing is not available on Fort McCoy; rentals are available in the nearby towns of Sparta, Tomah, West Salem and La Crosse area.
