National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Position Title: Curriculum & Program Development Assistant (temporary 2016 summer position) Duty Station: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located between the towns of Munising and Grand Marais in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The position will be stationed at the park’s headquarters office on Sand Point Road in Munising. The park protects over 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline, which includes 15 miles of cliffs that can reach over 200 feet, spectacular waterfalls, over 100 miles of hiking trails, and sand dunes that can be as high as 300 feet. The 2016 year marks the Centennial of the National Park Service (NPS) as well as the 50th anniversary of the park. For more information, visit http://www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm or https://www.facebook.com/PicturedRocksNL/ Position Description: The Education Division at the park has been awarded a grant through Eastern National to create a comprehensive 4th grade curriculum guide that will outline programming for both inside and outside of the park, including classroom settings. The guide will serve as an educational tool for agency staff, teachers and partnering educators. This project directly supports the Every Kid in a Park initiative to make it easier for schools to plan field trips and to provide educational materials. Primary duties for this position will include: Research and plan innovative, creative, and interdisciplinary curriculum and program ideas for the 4th grade level Assist with developing and working with teacher team(s) to identify teacher needs and standards criteria for relevant curriculum and program development Assist with writing and developing 4th grade curriculum and programs that support the NPS education goals and strategies and is correlated to Michigan’s Common Core Standards Provide support for curriculum and program review and editing, assist with design needs for the guide and supporting materials, and create and compile program supplies Assist with the planning for the evaluation process and tools for the curriculum guide’s first pilot year Qualifications: Interested candidates must possess strong communication skills, have experience with formal education, outdoor education and/or environmental education, and be enthusiastic, creative and flexible. Must be comfortable working with Microsoft Office programs and familiarity with Adobe Software package is a plus.
