ENERGY TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES Dec 11, 2012 @ 8 AM @ Aera Energy Committee Chair: Robin Fleming Vice Chair: Randy Adams Secretary: Sam Aunai “The Energy Technology program is designed to provide training and education in technical & professional skills to enable individuals to be job ready and professionally prepared.” Purpose Statement Committee Members Present: Robin Fleming, Randy Adams, Randy Stephenson, Randy Kizzar, Fred Holmes, Mike Thorsen, Trent Rosenlieb, Larry Williams, Jim Tague, Dave Howlett, Todd Yepez, Taft College Participants: Tori Furman, Paul Blake, Sam Aunai Agenda Discussion Items 1. Welcome/Introductions a. Introduced two members of the advisory committee (Dave Howlett, ESI Inc., and Todd Yepez, HR Manager, PCL) 2. Programmatic Update a. Instrumentation Equipment Module: Showcased the equipment model for the instrumentation class recently purchased with special funds (Perkins). The equipment will provide hands on practical application for students. b. Program Status: i. Developed a new website for the program ii. Purchased 15 equipment modules for the program iii. Currently have 87 students in the program. iv. In the process of hiring a full-time faculty for engineering/energy. v. Formalizing the internship program & process 3. Energy Technology Program SLOs a. Program Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) i. Students will be able to demonstrate technical competencies and safe practices through applied tasks. ii. Students will be able to apply ethical and professional skills in various settings. 4. Advisory Committee Objectives/Goals a. Advisory Committee can support Taft College and the program through assistance to: Continuously Improve Technical Training for Students Create permanent hands-on working lab experiences for students Strengthen student soft-skills with ability to apply and adapt in the current and future professional work environment Broaden Program Awareness to the Energy Industry and Provide On-Going Student Engagement Experiences Formalize and Maintain Outreach Actions with High School Students (Specifically the Oil Tech Academy & Energy and Utility Academy) b. Where to? How to support the program & students? Committee moving from programmatic development to on-going assistance to enhance the program. c. Committee – as an advisory body to the college. As such, recommendations made by the committee will be submitted/shared with college for consideration. 5. Sub-Committee Updates/Focus a. The Chair expressed that each of the subcommittees should be working committees meeting on their own to propose areas to support the college. Ideas and programmatic support recommendation provided by the subcommittee will then be presented to the general advisory committee for consensus and then shared with the college for consideration. Will be standing item for reports at advisory committee meetings. b. Subcommittees: Marketing & Outreach, Job Placement & Employment, Programmatic (Curriculum) Support c. Engineering Subcommittee/Taskforce (will be its own committee to help with the development of the new program) 6. Other a. b. c. d. e. Notes/Discussion TC will add student testimony page to the program website More opportunities for job shadowing, practical experiences, internships still needed Will provide focus outreach to high schools with oil & energy academies Industry career day/fair/events @ TC and mock job interview preparation support Smaller companies will need assistance with internships. 7. Follow Up/Next Steps a. Subcommittees to meet on their own b. TC to work with smaller companies to work on internship opportunities & processes 8. Next Meeting: March 12th March 19th @ 8 A.M.
