New Trilithic Miniature Filters Cover Broad Applications,
With High Q, Low Insertion Loss and Small Footprint
Indianapolis, IN (Monday, July 12, 2004). Trilithic Inc., today introduced the Miniature Series of RF filters that take
advantage of proprietary design techniques to deliver the high performance of filters typically much larger in size.
They are available in styles ranging from very low-cost surface mount types to MIL-SPEC and space-qualified
designs that pass the stringent requirements of screening for shock, vibration, temperature cycling, and other
parameters.
The Miniature Series filters provide the performance of tubular and LC-type designs in much smaller packages and
are available to meet the vast majority of filter applications. The series include low-pass, high-pass, band-reject and
bandpass filters, and can also be used as delay lines, with excellent control of group delay distortion.
Most applications for the Miniature Series can be satisfied with low-ripple Chebyshev designs, which combine low
passband VSWR, high sensitivity, and high attenuation in the stopbands. However, Butterworth, Bessel, linear
phase, Gaussian, and elliptic responses can be created to serve specific needs. The LC filter topology can be
customized as well, in order to provide higher rejection on the low side of the passband or arithmetically symmetric
rejection around the passband.
The surface-mount types are available in various styles. The Z Series is very small and can accommodate three
sections and cover a frequency range up to 1.5 GHz. The Y Series, which is larger, can accommodate up to eight
sections, and has a maximum frequency range of 3.5 GHz. The A Series, which is larger still and covers the same
frequency range as the Y Series can accommodate more complex designs.
Other package styles include TO-8 models to 1 GHz that accommodate up to six sections, in-line styles to 3.5 GHz
that handle up to 10 sections, low-frequency styles that cover up to 500 MHz (and as low as 2 MHz) and can handle
12 sections, and dual-filter types in surface-mount packages that cover up to 3 GHz with eight sections and are
designed for channelized receivers that require phase or amplitude-matching in pairs. They can also save board
space when used as a filter assembly for the first and second IF.
Other types include form-fit replacements for existing package styles, military and spaceflight models that meet fine
leak test specifications, can handle acceleration forces as high as 50 G, survive wide extremes of temperature and
humidity, and withstand corrosive environments. Nearly all package styles can be hermetically sealed.
