Many government recruiting agencies use a specific point system known as the Federal Qualifications Standard Method (FQS) to grade the government resumes of applicants. This point system enables recruiters to use education and related work experience to establish the most qualified candidate for the job. As a result, it is important that all applicants follow the guidelines for government resumes. To get a high score, applicants should also provide thorough details and a sufficient amount of relevant information on the resume. Because government resumes usually must contain more necessary information, such resumes tend to be longer than those submitted for positions in the private sector. Government resumes should range from two to four pages, depending on the amount of information required. Writing a resume for a government position can be tricky because the government requires specific pieces of information to be included that a standard resume doesn't. If you don't follow these procedures, your resume could be disqualified. Reading the job qualifications carefully and tailoring your resume to the specific needs of the position will increase your odds of landing a government job. Not all sections will be utilized depending on the requirements or announcement type specified by the government. Utilize the following sections as needed. Contact Information: The first section of the resume will include Name, Address, Phone Numbers and Email Address. Besides this basic information, you should also include your country of citizenship and your military status. Availability and Job Announcement #: State here the category of work for which you are applying (Permanent, Intern, Temporary, etc.). At this point, if available, include the Announcement Number for the position. Summary Statement: The summary statement is optional. In this statement, you should summarize the qualifications that make you a good fit for the position. Here is the opportunity to use keywords that may also be interspersed throughout the resume to get you full attention and get past the computer software that tracks keywords. Work Experience: Include company name, city/state, employment dates, salary, number of hours worked per week, and supervisor’s name and contact phone number. Not including this information may disqualify you for consideration for the position. Make sure to highlight responsibilities and achievements that would be of interest for the government position. Education History: Applicants must present a list of all schools they have attended accompanied by a list of all the degrees acquired, with the schools and degrees being presented in reverse chronological order (most recent degree to be listed). Read the posting description carefully to determine if you need to send official transcripts with your resume. Relevant Coursework or Training: Include a listing of courses completed, which are relevant to the job announcement description. For instance, a number of government positions require at least 24 hours in a business discipline. These courses should be listed by course number and title. Any other training that you have received should be listed here as well. Training can be a separate heading if preferred. Include relevant workshops and training, as well as certifications in skilled areas. Honors/Awards: Any awards or certificates that demonstrate your abilities to successfully complete the duties of the position should be included, but only those awards which are specifically related to the job posting or that you feel are relevant. This could include community activities, civic organizations and awards received. Affiliations: Include organizations that show community/civic service and professional organizations that are related to the workforce. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: This would include computer skills or training/usage of specialized equipment or apparatus. This can be in statement format listing five points about why your knowledge skills and ability match the job description if known. This section is optional. Other Qualifications: Federal resume standards allow applicants to include a section listing other qualifications. This should include relevant awards and certifications received. Many government jobs require that Form C be included with all resumes. This is a questionnaire that evaluates the applicant's qualifications. References: List at least three solid references of people who can and will vouch for your character/ethics and professionalism in the workplace, as well as job knowledge. These references should be up-to-date and include information such as name, address, phone number and email address. Do NOT use relatives as references! Remember: Keep in mind that a government resume is written in paragraph format, instead of a bulleted list Adapt your resume for the specific position for which you are applying Mention your strengths through job experiences, academic background or community activities Do not misrepresent yourself or exaggerate; employers do check information Keep it short, concise and clear Make it easy to read; avoid a cluttered look Leave spaces between sections; use headings to organize the details Eliminate irrelevant information and re-write until you think it is succinct and accurate Connect your skills to your job history Use the keywords pertinent to your job profile NOTE: USE CAPITALIZATION AND BOLD FOR EMPHASIS. STAY AWAY FROM ITALICS, UNDERLINING, BOXES, FANCY GRAPHICS, TYPEFACES AND BULLETS. 2
