APPROVED Minutes of the Graduate Council Friday, April 27, 2012 10:00 am Members Present: James Murray, Tony Sanderfoot, Steven Simpson, Kasi Periasamy, John Greany, Gary Willhite, Gary Gilmore, Jen Weber, Robert Krajewski Members Absent: Katie Josephson, Members Excused: Carol Angell, Melissa Bingham Consultants Present: Robert Hoar, Bruce May, Christine Bakkum, Raymond Abhold Consultants Absent: Consultants Excused: Charles Martin-Stanley 1. Approval of the minutes from 4/6/2012. MSP. 2. Discussion on the review process for RSEL Grants a. International travel grant is limited to $1400. Why do we cap travel, but not any of the other budget categories? i. Should make clear that we do not fund all grants at full funding. ii. Have a requirement for “Budget Explanation”, can be used to justify any cost of travel. iii. There is a “Travel Grant” option to cover travel separate from the RSEL iv. We should remove all limits on travel budget requirements. MSP. b. Category Specifications by students in cases where research crosses lines (i.e., the boxes to check on the application). i. There is an advantage to having the categories for helping the students to write their proposal. ii. Can we remove the checkboxes, but leave the review criteria for the potential options iii. Can we have a single “Review Criteria” section that has a single assessment, while removing the individual criteria from the each category from the guidelines? iv. Should add revisions as a task for Fall 2012 Graduate Council (Steve Simpson will carry forward). c. All RSEL Grantees must present at Celebration of Research, but this is not well tracked/enforced since the student may present at later Celebrations. i. Can faculty mentors take responsibility for presenting for students not available for the Celebration? ii. Is the purpose of “dissemination of results” to publically present results, or to support the Celebration of Research? Can presentation of the results in any public sphere count for this? (This is usually allowed on a case-by-case basis.) iii. Can remove “Required” from the line 6, and also remove “outcome” from “present their project outcomes during the Celebration” line to encourage students to present inprogress research. iv. Add these changes to any revisions for next year. d. Consider adding “Merit Review” or “Priorities” to RSEL procedures to allow ranking of proposals in case of budget changes in the future. This should be a discussion for next year’s council. 3. Other business a. Students can now register for GRC799 on their own. Should advertise this more widely to the Program Directors.
