1. Approval of Minutes from 9/7/2012. M/S/P – 1 Abstention
2. Status of the Graduate Student Appeals Policy document
• Document did not come forward in the spring
• Resubmitted in fall 2012Steve Senger (representing faculty senate) requests
clarification of selected items in the document before proceeding:
• Question: What is the role of the policy? It is meant to review the due process
in appeal process
• Two issues: 1) Due Process – to allow the student to provide their
perspective of the concerns (decisions that lead up to the dismissal) – students
not allowed to come to an appeal meeting; 2) Students unaware of process –
• Standard of Review (graduate level) – is what we are really looking at – Is
there some process in the decision to not readmit that requires a due process
review.
• Place on a future agenda – What is due process? – What is appropriate?
3. Discussion of Plans for Graduate Students in Fall Graduation Ceremony
a. Tracy Noyes from Continuing Ed.
• After each graduation there is a post review session
• May (there was a hooding ‘ceremony’) this was meant to be between the
student and faculty member – morphed into families and so forth – not
enough room.
• For December – hooding is moving into the large ballroom upstairs – the
reception will then be moved to the south hall. Both are being moved due to
size.
• Was mother’s day an issue? It was the time between ceremonies that was
an issue.
b. Changes, suggestions, recommendations
- Have programs in separate rooms not in the same area no matter how
large the room – does each program make its own reservation?
- Can we have more of a formal graduate ceremony? Chancellor Gow
wanted to shake every student’s hand so time is an issue
- What are we doing for fall? Large room might work for fall but not for

spring. Could we have more than one space? Zielke room was an option –
departments could do something on campus or elsewhere.
- original intent – for faculty and student only – reception for everyone
- suggestion to review various traditions – we decide as a university what is
our tradition
c. Result of discussion
- Programs need to decide by November 1 for the fall ceremony – to use
the same room or make their own arrangements otherwise
- department can set up their own banner – but will not be set up ahead of
time due to scheduling conflict with the La Crosse Center.
4. Discussion of Plans for Graduate Students in NCUR – April 11-13
- NCUR always has a place to advertise graduate schools – may have three
posters from graduate students in that space
- PT usually has between 15-18 posters and is written in to the syllabus that
they must present research publically
- critical mass of posters – sheer number may be an issue
a. Triangle of Posters in Graduate School Section
- limited to three posters
b. Planning a separate event for Graduate Student Posters/Presentations
- consensus to do this – how?
- issue then becomes – who is in charge of the event – grad studies?
- need to speak to grad program directors before decision made
- need to meet with grad directors – October 12
- tentatively the last of March/early April – Steve S book a room/date
5. Other business
- none
Meeting adjourned at 11:05 am
