April 15, 2011 At the beginning of the Fall Semester, 2010, the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse established a committee with two representatives from each of the shared governance groups to review the 2010 Smoke Free Wisconsin Act and its implication for UW-L as well as the enforcement requirements of the new state law. In conjunction with this the committee reviewed UW System and UW-L’s current smoking policy The members of the Smoking Policy Committee are as follows: Dennis Kline, Committee Chair, Academic Staff Council Ben Kolpitcke, Classified Staff Advisory Council Robert Krajewski, Faculty Senate Jason Krug, Student Senate Doug Kuenn, Academic Staff Council Scott Rohde, Ex-Officio Karly Wallace, Student Senate Melissa Weege, Faculty Senate Pamela Woods, Classified Staff Advisory Council As part of its work in reviewing this matter, the Smoking Policy Committee has convened for meetings ten different times since October of 2010. In addition, the committee members developed a survey for UW-L faculty, staff, and students regarding some important issues related to smoking on campus. The survey had a 20% response rate and these results were shared with the entire campus prior to three open forums which were held in late February. Upon reviewing the survey results, considering the opinions expressed at the open forums, and the health and landscape concerns of our campus; the Smoking Policy Committee recommends the following course of action for the UW-La Crosse campus: In order to improve the health risks and the overall appearance of campus, there should be three (3) designated smoking areas; one area for the East side, one for the West side of campus and one near the physical plant. Each area will have a concrete patio, benches and cigarette urns.
