Her name may be recognizable to some and new to others, but Sally Sloane is no stranger to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus. Since 1998, Sally has held a position in the Information Technology Services (ITS) Support Center providing technical support for software, hardware, special projects, and training just to name a few of her responsibilities. Sally also provides on-site support for problems that can not be resolved through the ITS Support Center Help Desk. It is always interesting to find out how people get their start at UW-L and Sally’s story is just as interesting. In 1968, on a suggestion from her sister-in-law who had been a former UW-L employee, Sally applied for a LTE position in the UW-L Computer Center then located in Main Hall. Sally worked only 5 months as an LTE, long enough for her to save enough money to buy a round trip airline ticket so she could join her husband who was stationed in Japan. Little did she know that this was the beginning of a long career at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. In 1976 the university was fortunate enough to rehire Sally again as an LTE in the Computer Center which had then relocated to the Wing Communications Building. Since then she has utilized her talents in many areas in Information Technology Services. In 1977 Sally became a permanent state employee as a key punch operator and one she remained in until 1989 at which time she moved into computer operations. Before you know it she then became a PC support person for Administrative computing users from 19911993. Just to give you an idea of the changes within the last ten years, during that time Administrative Computing provided support to approximately 386 dumb terminals and 250 PCs. Now Information Technology Services provides support to approximately 2,000 PCs campus wide. In 1994 administrative and academic computing combined forces and Sally again expanded her talents into the networking area. She remained in this job until 1998 when she transferred into her current Support Center position. When asked what she likes best about her job she replied, “definitely the people, working with the campus community and the ITS Support Center staff is very enjoyable and I treasure all the friends I have made along the way”. These days she is keeping quite busy with technical support, and she will soon be receiving training in conjunction with the migration of the Unisys system. Even though her position is not involved in the actual migration, it does require the preparation of learning how the new system works in order to provide support and training to all of us.
